Hello,
many thanks for all replies and likes!

There was some time quiet in the model shipyard.
Now I have started building the lower masts.
According to the original I build the lower masts from individual parts.
At least I try. Whether it works, will show.
For this purpose, I have drawn up a simplified scheme.

In the following I show a first attempt.

Here I show the assembly of the main mast.

And here I begin with the turning and grinding of the main mast.

Hi Albert,

thank you for your nice comment,

and all other for the likes.

On the next picture collage the grinding of the mast can be seen.
I do this with small boards on which sandpaper was glued.
With the fingers you can regulate very fine the pressure.
I hope I get a good result.

That's right.
At this length, the rod becomes more unstable in the middle, the thinner it becomes during processing.
To prevent this, you need a backpressure.
This is what I make sure by hand.

Johann,

beautiful handcraft work and an excellent built model...:)

Johann made me smile seeing the way you used a second Unimat bed and put the tailstock there to extend the length, a brilliant out of the box way of thinking.

Wonderful work, Johann! I am always in awe of your craftsmanship when I watch your build log! Are you actually using metal rings for your mast . . . not the usual black paper or foil? And if so did you describe somewhere in your log how you make them?

Best regards,

Thomas

Just spent the last few days looking through your build. As everyone has said it is superb, thank you for giving me plenty of ideas how to tackle jobs on my first scratch build.

I have a beginners question relating to your treenails.

I can see from your posts that you drill and insert dark wax to give the effect, but how do you stop the wax from over filling the grain surrounding the hole? They look so crisp.

Do you sand and seal the timber first then drill? Am I right in thinking the overall finish is wax and not a sprayed lacquer?

Also can you please share what products you are using to get that mirror finish on your timbers.

Thanks

Noel

Hello
Thank you for your interest in my construction report.

After drilling the holes, wax filler sticks are simply pressed in with small spatula.
The pearwood is treated with baling polish only after the "treenails" are made.
The following products are used:
Wax filler sticks LINK
Baling polish LINK

I hope that I have explained it in an understandable way.

Thank you Johann.

I was thinking more of soft wax, did not think of the hard Furniture scratch repair sticks. I can see how this would make the task a lot easier.

Thank you for explaining

Noel

Magnificent work......

I like how you coupled two small lathes together to complete the long job.
