Stag by Jim Lad - FINISHED - Scale 1:96 - English Revenue Cutter of 1827

So where does the expression "Groundhog Day" (meaning same thing over again) come from (apart from the movie that is) ?

Ah, February 2nd.  If you look (and listen) around Europe, there is a legend of the Lady of the Candles which occurs on Feb 2 of each year.  Probably has some ancient religious basis?  Anyway, this woman 'appears' carrying candles and, if they go out winter lasts another six weeks.  If they stay lit, Spring will be early.

Here in the USA we are more 'earthy', less ethereal.  So we have this legend of the groundhog.  He appears out of his hole on 2/2 and if he stays out, Spring will be early.  But if he sees his shadow and goes back in the hole, winter lasts 6 more weeks.  Same basic idea.  Except, being practical minded Americans, we have an actual groundhog, Punxatawney Phil, who lives in the state of Pennsylvania and we get the whole event on video.   Phil, who is currently female, lives forever of course!

I followed your log on MSW 1.0 but now I am really surprised. I didn't realize that the scale of your model was 1/96.

It's looking really good.

Since John has no update, I'll stay over on this topic for just a moment.  I believe one of the ancient bases for all this is Imbolc, If you Google it, you can find references to Irish, Roman, Pagan, and Wiccan festivities to name a few.  As an amateur astronomer, I am interested that it falls half way between the Winter Solstice (Northern Hemisphere) and the vernal equinox.  It seems that it was originally one of those "we really hope Spring is coming soon" events invented by people suffering from SAD.

Now, John, please get us back on track :)

  • 2 weeks later...

A small update at last.  I've been having some computer problems (Windows died) but all seems well now - that's why this update is a bit late.

Last Wednesday at the museum I got a little done, but spent most of my time talking to visitors and discussing the museum with one of the staff, rsther than in modelling.  Never mind - there's always next time!

Most of the hardware in now fitted to the mast and I must say I'm rather pleased with the overall look.  Everything is just sitting the loose at the moment.  Hopefully I can get a bit of serious rigging done next time I'm in.

John:

That is looking very good. Nice winch at the base of the mast. I like the iron work on the masthead as well.

The sail hoops look great. What material did you use on them?

John the mast hoops and the top fittings look great, the light at the end of the build must be more than just a glimmer now.

At 1:96 scale yet.  If I hadn't watched you do it I'd say you were kidding.  A fine build, John, A fine build.

Thank you one and all for your kind comments.  Although there's still a lot to be done on her, I can indeed now see the light at the end.  It must almost be time to start planning for the next one! :)

The mast hoops are simple - sections of brass tube treated with blackening solution.

John:

That is remarkable. You know, they have a solution called "Brass Brown". Bluejacket Shipcrafters sells it, but someone else surely must have some such solution. It makes brass look like wood.

Thank you Pat, Chuck and Janos.

The really frustrating thing at the moment is that the hull is at the museum and the spars are here with me at home.  I'm hoping to get all the blocks rigged on the spars before I'm next in at the museum, but I'm itching to get on with the rigging!! :(
