SD-14 Cargo ship by Kevin - SD-14 Model Company - 1/70 - CARD - middle section

Recommended Posts

Good evening everyone

well the transverse frames have all been put in (no glue yet) next will be the Longitudinal's which should allow me to ensure we have a few straight lines, but considering it is going together quite well

the book gives an insight to how the ship was deigned and built with details of every hull built, bit of a bargain of EBAY

Good morning everyone

well I have now 99% completed the the Tank top Longitudinal s, and hope to completed the rest today, have also started to remove the tank top plates, which will then complete the double bottom, still not sure how this section will be set in a diorama when completed but as for the stern the intentions are to show her as new, and the bow in a breakers yard

Good evening everyone, LOL it is me the one who used to post everyday, until  we got a dog, now what used to be spare time is shared time, but would not have it any other way

post-846-0-14733600-1477336566_thumb.jpg

on the SD14 having completed the tank top, the three Bulkheads for the deep cargo space then went in, these are now being firmed up as the big cross section frames go in, enjoying the build, but want to go back to the Victory soon

non of the top box girders are fixed yet hence looking a little squiffy

Good grief that beast is huge...  If you'd made it from metal it probably could haul cargo overseas.   Or maybe use it as a rowboat?    Seriously nice and complex work, Kevin.

Anyone happen to know what colour the decks, and bulkheads of 1960 cargo holds would be

I would possible ques at red oxide for everything or white bulkheads and green decks

Kevin,

The colour would be very much 'take your pick', but here are two photos looking down the hatches of two different ships in the late 60's for reference.  Some (but certainly not all) cargo ships of the period had permanent wooden ceiling on the tank tops.

good evening everyone,

Decided to go for a Grey primer for the deck, and a red orca for the bulkheads, this is all on top of a paper primer that I used Modge Podge

Good evening Danny, i have failed to update the log, I will try to address my shortcomings as soon as possible, Im not presently working on her at present, but I take bits to work with me and if i find time during my lunch break then i tend to do a bit of cutting out all my free time at home is on my HMS Fife build

I would imagine for the size of this hull,  there must be a lot of parts to cut out.........definitely takes a big bite out of the actual build time ;)    good to hear your still working on her........look forward in seeing your progress.

although it does not look any thing fantastic, a lot of work was required, just to get her to this stage, all the card has been painted in modge podge, which allows me to paint the surface

popeye, it has about 4500 pieces

There's a heck of a lot of construction work there, Kevin!

Jihn

yes there is but it is also very relaxing, you can see that one or two bits dont look right, but as more gets added, as there is another deck above this one it all ties in

Jon good evening

I changed my job in January this year, and as a result i have less free time on my hands, i finished the Bismarck in June  with all intentions of packing up boat building altogether, after discussing it with the admiral it was decided that to give up would be the wrong decission, but to get rid of most of my started but not completed builds that would never be completed. and to purchase a build of my dreams, on the proviso that they are completed

Out went the war train, M1070 transporter set Amerigo Vespucci and a few others, (build logs now removed), and that left me with the 1/70 SD14 and  1/72 Hms Victory and my new build the 1/72 HMS Fife

the fife takes all my home free time, the SD14 i can take to work and do some work on her at lunch times, and the Victory is on long term hold, as i am still undicided on how to complete her

What shade of "yellow" did you use on your Victory? Looks very nice and authentic. I want to do mine the same, but haven't figured out the right color, yet.

Isnt it Yellow Ocre possibly lightened down a shade, as she seems that way in real life, well last time I was on here as part of a naval week.
