Nice! Guess it took some time to translate it.

Glad to meet the kit designer! :)

Hello Mike!

I'm glad to meet mutually ;)

However, I'm not a designer of this kit "Polotsk".

Peter Sergeyev - our chief, the founder of the company "Master-Korabel" - designer of this kit.

And I'm working on the design of other new kits...

By the way, we are trying today or tomorrow to post on our official website

the latest version of the instructions  with the best translation into English

Thanks, greenstone!

In a meanwhile, we had a bit of delay because of another project: this took a bit longer than expected - the manual is 400 steps long, but the result is amazing - pneumatic cylinders work, fantastic! :)

Back to ship modelling - we started fitting the deck. It was an exercise in an endless cycle of "sand a bit - try again - make some pencil marks - sand a bit more".

The deck is laser cut to separate planks that are tied together by a few tabs. They are probably supposed to be installed separately, but we decided to cut some corners and install the deck as a single piece.

Daria had no problems sanding thin veneer, but I helped a bit every now and then - the process is too repetitive for a child.

The glue-up was simple in the beginning, but turned into a nightmare quite soon - planks swelled because of the moisture in the glue, became wider and started to push each other out. I ended up cutting off some planks in the middle to leave the room for expansion. It was a mess and the glue dried to quick, so no photos. While I was loosing a battle against the glue and moisture and swelling planks - Daria decided to cheer me up and made a cute drawing of us working on a model :)

That helped! :)

Resulting deck:

Fitting few parts around transom to close it off, I let her use the disk sander, which made her super happy - using some real adult tools, yay!

Then we did a bit of scraping:

5a8b0fb53ef5a_Foto2018-02-17191513.thumb.jpg.b130342332561e4ea37f14acc403ca3c.jpg

A lot of sanding:

And - finally - finishing! Used some Danish oil. Might be a bit too shiny, but it is the easiest finish to apply and dries relatively quick:

5a8b0fb7e9be6_Foto2018-02-19092721.thumb.jpg.4193a09892171cf8239c753eba3f927b.jpg

Final result. Kind of blotchy, unfortunately. Maybe we should have sanded the deck more.

The wood is not monotonous and have a bit different texture in different places.

But it's good enough for the purpose! :)

Great work Daria. And I think you have captured a very good likeness of your Dad in your drawing!;)

Installed decorative keel "tabs", that was easy:

Drilled the rudder hole (this was too scary to give to Daria), but she filed that hole to shape:

5ac11a8c9f7d9_Foto2018-04-01122828.thumb.jpg.df0a0a93d02ca15e91b8e05c90be5f9c.jpg

And she made an "eye" :)

5ac11a90a36a7_Foto2018-04-01124412.thumb.jpg.8301136d9ef6bdd3f04187407c4b8c7a.jpg

Previously I was filing all tabs for her (they are oversized in the kit), but now she is doing it herself. Though I am keeping an eye on a file angle, this is quite tricky for her, so far. But improving slowly. This is also the only photo in this update done by me :)

Stem and stern dry fitted. Note the ebony piece, fantastic quality!

And she is proud of the composition of this photo :) Will go pretty far on Instagram!

Quote from the author: "I wanted to make a fun photo for you :D, to have a photo with more colours. Other photos have very few colours - brown, black, that's it. This one has more!"

Hello Daria

Great work and I like your "Eye". Tell dad that you are a pretty good photographer as well but your pretty socks look MUCH better than his hands! Are they special Easter socks?

Great photography Daria! Looks like you’ve got the hang of using the file too.

May was very busy, so we barely had any time for modelling. Daria also made some things for a school fair, using a wood pieces that we found in our neighbourhood. They are sanded and finished with Osmo Polyx, both processes were easy enough for her to do. I am a proud dad :)

First time using bandsaw on her own (with my supervision, of course). Pro tip: avoid cutting pine, this stuff gums up everything - blade, bearings, etc.

The model is slowly progressing. It goes well, though it would be nice to have a bit thicker veneer - it is quite thin, need to be very cautious when sanding it. Also, the grain is really out of scale, not much I can do about it.

So far nothing is sanded, sorry.

Using blue painters tape instead of clamps, works great!

Daria is getting comfortable with a scalpel, learning proper holding angles and pressure. No self-cuts yet :)

This is her favourite part of the planking process, for some reason. :D

Aaand she is off to her grandparents, so the building will resume in the end of August :)

Nice work on the planking Daria! And it looks like you’ve mastered the Bandsaw as well. I hope you have a lovely holiday with your Grandparents. We look forward to your next update when you return.

Can't wait till the end of august begins. This is a real cliffhanger! You two made me so enthusiastic for this kit, I just had to order one for myself. And the kit is on her way now even as we speak (write). A real bargain for €130!  (Shipment included). I just hope customs won't impose import taxes :(

Yes, well, maybe. I'm better at reading than posting. And I don't have such a great help as your daughter. My youngest son (17) prefers beating me at golf in stead of helping me building a model ship  :( . I expect delivery of the model tomorrow. I wonder if the pre cut sails are included or if I will have to order them seperately. We'll see

Mike, you have a great daughter that certainly will become a shipmaster and beat us all with her skills.

Daria, enjoy your time with your grandparents.

mmm, there were some sails if I remember correctly, but would be interesting what you will find.

Kit has arrived in perfect condition. No import taxes (lucky me). There is sailcloth included, unfortunately not precut. Oh, well...

Dutchman, can't find your Polotsk build log, time to start one? ;)

Daria is back from grandparents, back to the build. The hull is sloooowly closing up, teaching a lesson or two about persistence, patience and planning.

Here is final one, garboard plank. It is tricker, because it needs to be fine fitted carefully to the "keel". All the other planks do not require any fine fitting, except the front tip that meets the stem.

Fine fitting was a nice exercise, with a dozen of dry-fits for each plank on a way there. But Daria managed to do it in one session, without getting tired. That made me really proud!

88505843_Foto2018-09-08155258.thumb.jpg.109bbc29609c65686b4adcc67cf3c9c6.jpg

Fine fitting with a plane (two-man job so far):

1324470271_Foto2018-09-08155519.thumb.jpg.03a6ace71acffb414b2376e3b66b382b.jpg

In parallel, she was assembling a furniture for her cardboard-and-fantasy-made fairy house :)

I am completely not involved, totally her design and implementation, she just casually walk to me to get some tool or glue. Getting quite comfortable with a scalpel, btw (used it to cut some windows). It is still in progress, she is making some furniture (gluing a book shelf out of cardboard strips in multiple iterations, which warms my heart).

1095778391_Foto2018-09-08205602.thumb.jpg.e1187300ac0380383391da9e3ab8c451.jpg

144454028_Foto2018-09-08205622.thumb.jpg.91f90c12f7aedc96d87ed60db7f617cf.jpg

She already starts talking about making a fairy house out of wood, and hints that I have just the right tools for that and plenty of spare plywood 😎

Back to the model - a milestone is achieved, the last plank is in place!

874965883_Foto2018-09-08201724.thumb.jpg.7b13e0956ac40ddb06363ddda0c35736.jpg

Now she will remove all glue spots with a Dremel nylon bristle brush, trim plank ends and sand it smooth.

Daria is super happy about the milestone and asks me to post it to the log asap :D

Lovely work, Daria. It's so satisfying to reach a goal one has worked toward for so long. Thanks to you and your dad for sharing your work!

Great job on the fine fitting of the Garboard plank there Daria, and of course reaching such a significant milestone. Your fantasy house looks fabulous too - I think Dad might be a bit jealous of that one!

Great to see you making such fantastic progress on the ship again Daria.

It is also great seeing your Fantasy dollhouse.

Just tell your dad that this is the one you want:
