Thank you guys! Appreciate all the comments. I’ll be back in a little over a week and hopefully have some more updates on chapter 9 and the upper deck planking.

Small update… There’s always more guns to build!

So I realized my lumber stash is lacking significantly so I wrote Joe at modelers sawmill and ordered some sheets of AYC so I can cut those curved margin planks and the forward curved planks for the bow, in the meantime I thought I would start on the aft deck and I got this far before I realized I was also out of 1/4” planking billets! Sent Joe another email and ordered plenty of those… at least there are always more guns to build to keep me busy while my AYC finds its way here.

It really does look good.  I hope the new planking billets will match in color close enough.  You should cut some strips and then apply some finish as a check before you glue any down.  You could easily remove those few planks on the qdeck if they dont match and just use the same new stuff.

the thought crossed my mind. I told Joe to send the lightest stuff possible and I sent photos of my 5/16” stock (from syren) with a white background to give perspective. Fingers crossed, the margins and three planks took oh around 8 hours. If the wood is too light I can darken it but if it’s already too dark then I’m ripping planks off!

Looks crisp and nice. Good idea to check colors of billets. There can be a wide variance, I spent a lot of time matching colors. But yikes I’m out of matching ones.

Thanks Glenn. I’m kinda stuck at this point because it also matches the gun deck so I guess I may be buying a lot of billets to get it right!😬

Small update.

So I received my lumber supply from @Joe V at modelers sawmill, wonderful job on milling and sending me just what I needed, thank you Joe!

i was able to finish the port QD as well as the bow planking. The Bow was quite a project and required a lot of patience as each plank is a mini project of its own but it was well worth the effort.
One thing I noticed after applying WOP, depending on the grain direction, the plank appears to change its tone at different light angles as you can see below, some of my planks are obviously facing different directions but it’s not nearly as dramatic to the eye and not even possible to tell until poly is added… also note I just added WOP to the stbd side so it’s even more dramatic but it will settle down in 24hrs. But I’m happy with the results overall and the quality of the wood. I will begin planking the center of the foredeck today and hopefully finish in a few days. Oh I finally got a new slitting blade from Byrnes model machines, can you believe I’ve been cutting all my wood with a 36 tooth and sanding both sides smooth for all this time! Lol. Excited to bolt this thing on.

Thanks Jim, I absolutely went crazy with it and just started ripping planks that I didn’t even need, just because it was fun and they looked so good. I can’t believe I didn’t get this sooner. I’m going to order a couple more so I never run out of them! Ha!

Completed chapter 9 a few days ago and already onto 10. Spent a lot of time on fitting things, lots or test/sand/repeat, until it fits right . The railing was kinda tricky due to the fact that my bow is slightly out of shape from not checking/correcting this very early on but I made it work and am happy with the results. I spent a lot of time of the cat heads and trying my best to make them look identical, I even laid a batten down across them to make sure they were at the same angle, this being off would drive me nuts.08A2CD07-FD27-4A02-A659-CE0E309BEC11.thumb.jpeg.23a1f754a14eff12e6784ac523dd99b1.jpeg

the spanshackles  were made from round copper wire and soldered, filed and then filed/sanded to look flat.5B540737-AA7E-4AB4-AAFD-F600392762D5.thumb.jpeg.01a5e52b32e3dec39919754ba36d6e8c.jpeg

Took a lot of care to make sure the belfry fit right, so I actually took adhesive backed sandpaper and stuck it to the part of the deck at which it would be glued down and gently sanded the deck camber into the bottom, I think it worked well. I pinned it down, it’s a certainty I will probably knock it off otherwise. Thanks for checking in.

JJ

ps. Please excuse my filthy model, it is an absolute sanding dust ball!

Well, I don't get much opportunity to look at other threads, but here I can see that I'm missing out on a lot by doing so. What strikes me about your model is the attention to detail, precision and exceptional neatness of execution, but without that undesirable effect of excessive, artificial sterility. I wish "my" modellers here would also build my reconstructed ship to your standard, but I know they too have a deadline...

That’s a really fine looking model. Excellent tricks for mounting and making things fit correctly, and for taking the time for small details.  Thanks for sharing them. Your forecastle planking will be my reference if I ever get there. Well done!

Concluded chapter 10, no issues, smooth sailing. The wheel may have been the trickiest part as it’s so small and fragile. Back into full swing of gun production now as I wait for chapters 11&12 to arrive. Hope to have the waist filled in this week and start slowly adding the 6 pounders as I progress on chapter 11.

Thanks for checking in.

Beautiful work, JJ!  Your photos are really well done, too.  The close ups really show off the detail of your work.  Your wheel and binnacle look so good!  I also really like the mating of the cap rails to the fancy moldings in the bottom photo of your post.
