HMS Winchelsea 1764 by Matt D 1:48

Here’s my first attempt at a quarter gallery.  I just have it tacked up with rubber cement, but I think I’m ready to glue it permanently.

That looks pretty good.  The aft window needs to be lowered but i know how hard it is to tack everything in place.  You did a fine job.

I’m at a really neat spot in this build.  There are about half a dozen things I can work on right now.  I have the Old Masters Gel Stain for the resin figures. I’m also starting the roof shingles.  The upright details on the Q galleries are a lot more challenging than I expected, so they’re going to take a lot of time and patience.  The starboard side gallery is waiting for a replacement part for the lower apron.  But I think it’s safe to put the commode in now, so I might do that soon.  I’m also working on scraping moldings.  It’s fun to have choices on what to do next.  Planking was a very serial process.

I’ve spent the past few weeks working slowly on the stern.  I have several errors, but on the whole, I’m pretty happy with it.  I don’t know how you guys make these columns look so perfect.  Maybe I need to build a few more of these before I can get it.  I know one issue is that  my spacing is a little off, making the columns shorter than planned.  I think that is also why the bottom molding on the counter is a little high, creating a gap that I had to cover with a second molding.  I also broke Poseidon’s trident.  I have an idea from Chuck on how to fix it using coarse wire, but I’m not ready to work on that yet.

Looking good Matt. Feels good to get to that point, it’s like a gigantic pay off for chapter two!

Thanks for your nice comments, Chuck, Don, Dr. Per, Mike, and JJ.  Thanks, also for the likes.  I love working on this project with the Winnie group.  I knew I was biting off a lot, but I really wanted to build a new model in a big group.  It’s definitely paying off in both camaraderie and learning.

Matt we seem to cast the most critical eye on our works. In our minds eye we hold unforgiving perfection but the execution, to us anyway, never seems to measure up. This pursuit demands so much of us especially with the incredible peers that post here. I'd say you are closing that distance quite well.

Thanks for your kind comments,  Joe, Kathy, and Wyz.  I can’t wait to get back to work on Winnie.  I’m tied up with a kitchen floor project for a little while right now.

I made some progress this weekend.  I completed the Q gallery columns on the starboard side.  The port side has been done for a while, but it looks like I haven’t put any pictures of it in my log.  I’m getting ready to add the friezes and moldings.  The moldings are a struggle.  I tried to make a shaper for the middle molding and thought I had a good profile.  But what came out looks completely different.  It might work for the bottom, but not the middle.  My picture doesn’t really do it justice.

Those close-ups on the q-galleries really show my mistakes.  I'm not sure I can make them much better, but I'm going to at the very minimum add some filler to the gaps.

I’m working on the q gallery roof railing.  These parts are small and delicate.  I have found that I have to go slowly to get good results.  I’m taking it one piece at a time (and it didn’t cost me a dime).  I don’t have a picture of it, but that first post sure looked lonely all by itself.

I’m also working on the friezes and moldings.  Here’s my middle molding, which turned out to be the first profile I made.  The more I looked at it, the more I liked it for this spot.

You’re making progress fine Matt, and the roofs and all the rest as well look very, very good to my eye. You’re about finished when I will be able to get my workboard....

I only freed the laser cut parts of the false keel and frames thusfar...can’t start without a workbord ofcourse.

I’m working at a snail’s pace on chapter 3, inching my way to completion.  I really like working with the friezes and I’m pretty happy with how my moldings are turning out.  I’ve also completed the q gallery roof railings.  And I took a page out of Bob’s build log and used Micro Kristal Klear for the windows.  I really like how they look and it seems like it reinforces the delicate frames.  Thanks for showing that, @rafine!

Thanks, Tom and Bob!  And thank you to all the “likes”.  Last week, I was putting one or two pieces of molding on each day. But I’m out of town for work this week, so all I can do is look at other people’s build logs until the weekend.

Your build is really coming to life and looking good Matt. Also your report is a pleasure to read and follow.

I’m very busy working as well with long days and wish I could spend more time in my attic building, so I recognize the feeling I guess you sometimes must have as well. Keep up your good work!

Frank.

I’m nearly done with chapter 3.  I really struggled to make decent moldings for the bottom.  In fact, I’ve run out of boxwood strips and had to get two more from Syren.  The port side is done and has a coat of WOP, which makes the friezes look very rich and beautiful.
