I just got caught up on your log. WOW! Some of the finest planking I've ever seen. Beautifully done!

Thanks all for the comments! The color choice is really growing on me, especially when seeing the smaller details come together (like the dark blue and white stripes). I'll have another point of confusion with colors when I get to work on the stern gallery. Right now I am keeping an open mind and looking at other models for inspiration.

I painted the white pinstripe on the top and bottom edges of the red part. I think this completes the major painting of the hull. To paint these, I measured the location of the masking tape 3+ times to ensure the white will be the same width throughout. The measurement also needed to accommodate the width of the moulding strips. Measuring this was the hard part. Right now, the lower white stripe is thicker than the top. Once the moulding is in place (just above the dark blue stripe), it will cover the lower portion of the thicker white stripe, so both white stripes will end up being the same width (well... let's hope so!).

Hi WG,

I like the colors of your upper works. I posted the painting  of the Confederacy on the forum awhile ago. When I came upon it,I had already painted my upper works black or I might have used the color scheme as you did. How authentic it is,I guess we will never know for sure, but it sure looks great on your construction. It looks like the quarter galleries where painted the same. My Confederacy proceeds at a glacial pace,I don't update my log as I live in a remote rural area and our satellite internet is one step above dial-up. A photo uploading is like watching paint dry. Keep up the fine work.

Hi John, thank you for posting that photo. I was browsing MSW a while back, saw the image, and immediately saved it as I was considering to try it out. I don't think I would have attempted to paint it that way if I did not see this picture.

Hello WalrusGuy,

Looking at your pictures just above I just noticed that you stopped planking just behind the rearmost gunports respectively on bulkhead No. 8. Is this a mistake (sorry) or intention?

Hello Werner

Yes I made a mistake on this. No need to apologize, I really appreciate you pointing this out. If I were to carry on the build I would be facing a lot of headaches trying to get the quarter gallery done. I'll fix this immediately before moving on to the next parts of the build. Thanks again! If you had not mentioned, I would be struggling to build the quarter gallery and would be wondering why.

Below is my plan of action to solve this. The rectangles show the individual planks I will glue:

I'll post the progress on the log on how I solve this issue.

Thank you, Steven.

I managed to fix the issue with planking at the stern.

I first cut out the planks as shown:

20220112_215147.thumb.jpg.959b79587c85f7b5fec5b70d7f2f385a.jpg

Then added these filler pieces:

20220112_221904.thumb.jpg.395bfb1f0ec2c3abf96e11c4b1d2a534.jpg

Did some planking and treenailing, then applied tung oil:

20220114_211110.thumb.jpg.bec4bf9877b1ab287fb5064e21852efe.jpg

Lastly, I finished with the painting. It is not as perfectly seamless as I had hoped, but a lot of it will be covered up with the quarter gallery parts and some scrollwork so I am not very worried. I hope there will be enough visual distractions to hide any mishaps. And to note, I widened the area of the white pinstripe since there is a small section where the mouldings stop, and I wanted that part to seem like the white part met the dark blue.

20220116_215902.thumb.jpg.d03117642d3359e48a80ea656d423905.jpg

And I made some of the mouldings using a scraper. The only parts left to complete the major hull work is to install these and work on the sternpost.

A bit of a long update!

The sternpost is fitted. Instead of gluing it directly on the counter planks, I opted to cut out a notch so that it fits through. I used a combination of mini chisels, #11 blade, and files to make this notch:

20220121_114914.thumb.jpg.89a9494db98ef80e9f1a06211584671d.jpg

20220121_114937.thumb.jpg.e98e4ba5b1155771100864ed6fe8c17c.jpg

Since the sternpost was still removable at this stage, I decided to cut out the helm port. First I drew an outline of the port, used progressively bigger drills on the plank right beside the sternpost, then used chisels and blades to make it bigger. The final 1-2mm was done using a semi-circular file

20220121_142939.thumb.jpg.9e733ae61552fa51d8e5e64f67e00b2c.jpg

Here is a photo with the sternpost dryfitted:

20220121_143001.thumb.jpg.f94e5fb9a82b513fd6e705d03143baed.jpg

I used the rudder piece to make adjustments to the port making sure it can rotate freely:

image.png.fd16d1e7652d6da175c2b09cfa42e163.png

The moldings were also added after gluing the sternpost. I first only glued the 1-2 cm of the molding that touches the stern post. Then after the glue was set, I applied glue to the rest of the strip. This was done since there is a slight curvature and I needed one part to be fixed before gluing the other end.

I also assembled the stand that came with the kit. I think I will use for further construction to prevent scratches on the keel from the board from previous posts. I just sanded the char off and did not apply any finishing. Ribbons were glued to prevent any scratches on the hull.

A very fine model with all the treenaling and the coloring in red and blue!

There is a point in the building instructions I did not agree with and therefore changed the way of construction. The lower moulding strips shall be glued on completely, which means they have to be removed partially where the channels are to be mounted. I changed the way and glued the moulding strips in seperate pieces alternating with the channels. I hope you don' t have too much work in removing the concerned segments of the moulding strips.

More pictures of my model in the german forum coming soon!

Looking forward to seeing photos of your model, Werner. I did not fully realize that the channel wales go in the locations of the lower mouldings. I think it shouldn't be too big of an issue to remove the strips at those locations. I plan to use sharp blades and carefully removing them. There is a seam where the two mouldings meet (since the strip I used was not long enough to cover the entire hull), so if this seam is between two channels, I'll replace it with a full strip. I hope I remember this when the time comes!

It was brought to my attention that the lower most plank at the stern counter should follow the entirety of its length together with its moulding (I really appreciate the feedback since I can fix it early on!). After seeing it end partially, it is starting to bug me whenever I see it. So I plan to fix this before progressing with the build.

I am also considering to paint the counter planking blue. Another option I am considering is to slightly open the gun ports. I want to try making working hinges (no idea if I can pull this though), so this will be a good experiment for me. The red line here indicates the required curvature of the bottom moulding to follow the curve of the plank.

Very nice work on the planking Harshil, your willingness to fix the small errors speak well to your future models. I find that for myself accepting well found critical comments, helps me improve my own skills. I am sure that one day it will be your turn to help others as well.

Hello walrusguy,

I must admit that I was a bit astonished when I first visited this log and saw the pictures showing how the hull planking matched with the planking of the lower counter along its bottom edge.

My way of construction was to build the planking of the lower counter as a separate part - similar to the sub-deck platforms - using the stern view on sheet one (similar to that above) as a template, see the respective pictures from my german forum (sorry, uploading didn´t word, don´t know why.)

However, I think it is not really a problem for you to get an excellent fix.

Thanks all for the generous comments! Werner, I wish I had thought of planking it separately. I think the overall process would have been easier than to plank on the model itself, and I would have avoided this mistake.

So... I managed to fix the counter area without too much of a problem. Truth be told, I enjoyed the process! Makes me believe I'd love to do a scratch POF build some day.

First, the location of the curve was marked using a compass where the width was set to two plank widths:

image.png.c532f27b7c4fc8dcc7f83b54c6691468.png

Then, the curve was scored lightly using a sharp chisel. After I got the general line, I progressively used a bit more force for a deeper score.

image.png.f4a62195c3119d2c2e9a9cfc9162ee42.png

The two bottom most planks were then removed, as well as the hull planking below the scored line:

20220128_185946.thumb.jpg.e12d888204593e392d8366682cc5b495.jpg

Here, I noticed the portside wale was not extending all the way to surround the counter planking. So I marked the location of where the wales need to end:

 20220128_185950.thumb.jpg.6f2d889beab4fdb5c46a910b81131169.jpg

I then planked, treenailed, and finished the planks with tung oil:

20220128_225325.thumb.jpg.ff029e8194ffef54cafee267515a8e35.jpg

Here, shims of wood was used to extend the wales:

20220129_104733.thumb.jpg.01c357335275dba82eea007916ae9181.jpg

20220129_104736.thumb.jpg.e970bfb37872602b0fdb93adcc54b8c3.jpg

I sanded it to be the same thickness of the wales and then filled it with glue mixed with sawdust. I also scored the wood to follow the run of the wale planks:

20220129_113115.thumb.jpg.f331ad5ff3cfc03d9d8f92792aab9fed.jpg

20220129_121356.thumb.jpg.9b76cea5b82153fb72d3cbbc431c36c0.jpg

Depending on lighting, I can still see a very faint line where the two woods meet. But I think it will be harder to spot once more details come in.

Lastly, I glued in the moulding strips. I had to bend these similar to how I bent the counter. Once bending, the mouldings became flat, so I used a scraper again once the wood was fully dried, and I used the metal bit of a compass to widen the lines.

I am still deciding whether to paint this section blue. For now, I am leaning on the current finishing with tung oil.

So... I managed to fix the counter area without too much of a problem. Truth be told, I enjoyed the process! Makes me believe I'd love to do a scratch POF build some day.

Hi Walrusguy

just looking at your build and it is really nice. The planking and joinery is top notch. As for doing a scratch POF… are you kidding?  I am no expert but from what I see you should definitely take the leap to scratch building. It would just be a small hop for you!
