Wow what a respons !!!!!!

Thank you thank you thank you, Randy - Grant - Adam - John - Rich - Jan - Frank - Robert - Sam - Edwin - Mobbsie - Bob - Ben - Draggz - Mark - Piet and Popeye......

I think that I have to copper a few more hulls....so who have a hull that needs to be coppered ????? :D  :D  :D  :D  :D

@ John,

You can find the link at the bottom of my posts.

It is the San Ildefonso.

I know that it's not the Fonz but the shorted they name Agammenon to Aggy so ( think it was Augie ) he shorted the San Ildefonso to the Fonz .

Cool guy and a cool ship  :D  :D  :D

@ Sam,

When I need to do another hull with copper ,then i will do it !

But I have to say it is boring.......

I think it is better when you are doing the coppering, you do something else in between.

That's ( in my opinion ) the best way to do it.

@ Bob,

Yes, I'm happy that it is done !

At the end you have to be careful that you are still concentrate with what you are doing .

Because you did so many that it is very easy to do it wrong.

I know, I should not working or thinking about the Aggy but I have a question.

At the rudder post and bow post, I placed the copper tiles in vertical directions.....

All the other copperplates are horizontal......

Should I do that also on the posts or can it stay like this ?

If someone has an answer for me, please !!!!!!!

the rudder should follow the hull Sjors......it's more uniform  ;)  if you've already done the posts in that fashion,  then I think it best to leave it.  having never coppered before,  it's hard for me to say........I would think it would be easy to do the stern if the keel itself was done in the horizontal fashion....you'll just continue up from there.   but from the keel to the turn of the bow.......from here I did a visual;)

I looked at the hull of the United States.........the stern post is blended into the rest of the hull....there is no distinguishing feature.....the keel is done in the same fashion as the hull.....horizontal.  it stays horizontal,  done in step to the rest of the hull....there is no vertical to it.  it's a plastic hull.....I know......and I'm not totally sure if it is correct.

if you wish to change this......do be careful.   you've done such a great job with your coppering,  I would be saddened to hear that it got marred by a mistake.

Thanks Popeye,

On the rudder post I have put them vertical .

Not the rudder it self

Also at the bow post.

I just leave it that way.

I never get a clean cut when I place that also horizontal.

Sjors - to be sure I understand your question, I think you are referring to the plates fixed on forward and after surfaces of the bow and sternpost (?), thats what I see in your photos.  The only place I found a diagram of was in the AOTS book "HMS Pandora".  This shows the horizontal copper plates bending round the faces.  I did my Snake exactly the same as you, as the solution is the simplest, and it also give you a nice edge,  I thought at the time that the copper plates were too thick to be able to give a sharp enough 90 degree bend.  That could look good using thinner tape maybe.

Cheers,

Jason

Jason,

You just understand what I'm saying  :D  :D  :D  :D

Also for me it's to difficult to bend those plates, just what you are saying also.

I don't get an edge of 90 degrees.

So I'm happy with it and I keep it this way  :)

For the rudder itself ,I'll do the same thing.

Only where the hinges are coming , I paint it the copper colour....

Otherwise I've got problems with those hinges ( if that's the  correct word for it )

Hoi Sjors, "technically" it may not be accurate but at this stage in your build it's probably a wise desision to leave well enough lone.

For future reference - - regarding not getting a sharp 90 degree bend in the copper plates, try using  a small thin steel ruler on the reverse part of the plate and bend the plate up against it by using another flat thingy that can be a piece of hard wood or steel.  I would probably use a flat-nose or duckbill pair of pliers that have real sharp edges.  I made mine that way from an old pair on my bench grinder and I get real good 90 degree angles in brass sheet stock.  I do help it a little by tapping the brass against the pliers.

A little practice doing this will get you great results.  Copper is soft and there should be no reason for not getting perfect angels.

Hey, I could hop on over and demo it for you  ;)   I could also make a few demo pics to show what I mean.

Cheers,

Piet, The Flying Dutchman.

Hej Sjors,

Really great copper work !!

As for your "edge question", I also might have a tip you can use next time or try out on the rudder.

When I have to bend ”sharp edges on copper plates I use a (steel) ruler and a “sharp knife”.

I cut a line on the plate with the knife and bend the plate on my clamping device very easy into 90 degrees angles.

You might want to try this out and see how it goes with the copper plates ..

Note: Be careful not to bend the metal “back and forth” too many times as it will break easily on the line.

I added a few pictures to illustrate this technique .. (I hope you don’t mind..) just let me know and i will delete them..

It's not only for me but also for others......

I will use that when I'm gonna do the rudder.
