Hi all.... Just dropping by to say hi, and show you my current project.....

screenshot_548.png.bb0306282fd0031cb5d0ce376d29712c.png

A race car of some repute.... Progress is slow, I'm working from images snagged from the net as there are no detailed drawings available....

A semi bottom view....

image.png.bb5d9f63ca62a488016e7dfc84ab844d.png

The car only ran one race season and one race and it's driver, (who was also it's designer & lead engineer) won, placed or showed in almost every major race it ran in, (over 100 races) it won the first major race it was entered in and the last...

The Driver was named the first International Driving Champion.....

Just something to keep my head in modeling while I try to get over some serious real life issues....

I've been told I should probably do a log... Easy to do with this one as it is all one part at a time...

What do you all think?

I'd say yes, do a log.   It keeps us interested and helps the builder to focus.  We do need our distractions from real life issues and I and others are doing it.

Well, another day... I haven't left this behind.... just been a bit occupied...

Finished up the driveline package today....

Consists of the Differential/Axle assembly, The Transmission, The Driveshaft Tube/Thrust collar assembly and the Truss Rods and Diagonal Braces....

Here is a look at her current state...

screenshot_560.png.88d98b11a8dffcf57349f52755785640.png

I will be starting a part by part re-tracing of the design, and throwing a bit of history into the mix as well....

The car is the Marmon Wasp, she won the first major race ran at the brickyard, The Wheeler & Schebler Trophy race May 28th 1910, this was after winning a great many trophies and awards at lesser events in both '09 & early part of 1910...

I have thje record of her 18 major wins in her short career. She was taken out of retirement to run the International Sweepstakes Race, (the inaugural Indy 500, which was her last race) at the Speedway May 30th 1911..... It was the only race she ran in 1911...

For a year and a half, October 1909 until May of 1911, she was the car to beat.... The first supercar.... She didn't win every race, but 95% of the time she finished the race in one of the first three positions... (the second winningest car? a trimmed up Marmon 32 Speedster)

There is a ton of interesting background I'll be getting into as I go through this log...

Well, still plugging along...

Finished hooking up the emergency brakes and designed the brake lever bracket....

This is where she is at as of a few minutes ago.....

screenshot_567.png.ae5fb1b1112f2a79f3b99e8621bb744e.png

Once the Brake and Shift Levers are done I move on to the clutch pedal then the operating chassis hardware will be complete....

Not sure where I will go next, probably figure out the steering and finish off the front end.... After that back to the engine....

Onwards...

Well, another little piece...

screenshot_570.png.56f9d88cc64ba6b0516edb52c90f7dc0.png

The brake isn't set and the tranny is in neutral.....

And the overall look from the right side....

screenshot_571.png.c75cf21c5638b355fdfd604f4926055f.png

The next and final step to getting the operating controls all hooked up, (except for the Steering) is the Clutch linkages, Throw-out bearing and forward universal... (which is represented by those two conical discs in the frame bay behind the conical clutch... The Clutch pedal is mounted in the engine compartment...

The clutch is actuated by a linkage from the engine compartment to the cockpit which operates a torque tube to rotate the throw-out bearing which carries the clutch away from the flywheel... The Clutch pedal also operates the driving brakes and is adjusted to engage after the clutch has disengaged... They were a pain in the you-know-what to keep adjusted correctly.... I don't have an image of the linkages used to effectuate this for this car, but I do have such for the 1911 National model 40 which was set up identically to this car.... (a National Model 40 won the 1912 Indy 500) This brake setup was standard on these race cars during this period, the civilian production variants were set up differently with independent brakes....

Anyways, Onwards....

Another small update...

Clutch Pedal and it's mechanism....

screenshot_572.png.28dadb164133568862a38079ba414332.png

Only roughed out at this point, I still have to figure out how it attaches to the frame....

But, as far as the driving Brakes connection, I found this...

screenshot_573-0.thumb.png.5580cf8140a0a7fa691f995b6f111567.png

Lower right corner, in the background just above the clutch operating rod, is the clevis that attaches the brake rod to the clutch pedal.... looks like a little round bearing on a triangular tab on the back side of the pedal arm...

A look from the right side...

screenshot_574.png.9147b5106b850bf5062b7269c871fdf5.png

And a direct left side view....

screenshot_573.png.5f5e040427dd1fb1db8dff4ac70cf3ba.png

So that leaves the right side pedal in the cockpit as the accelerator pedal....

So I'll finalize this addition, and look at what's next, probably the engine cause the intake needs to be complete and the firewall installed before I can address the Accelerator pedal... (it is a lot simpler than the clutch pedal)

Onwards...

Well, going over what is next, I need the firewall to do the steering and accelerator pedal... SO in getting the little things done first, I decided to add the Steering Linkages, the Steering Knuckle off the right spindle and the Pittman arm off the steering box, then the steering gear box itself... I need the Gear box in place cause it sets some of the angles needed for the steering wheel and it's support structures.... I need the firewall in place cause it sets the location of some of the accelerator linkage details....

And all that before I need the Carburetor.... So finishing off the Engine gets pushed back a little more on the schedule...

Anyway, here is the progress on hooking up the steering....

screenshot_576.png.2b758498731329594c8e9199a5c8638f.png

This image shows both arms in their relative locations, the drag link connecting the two comes next...

Location of where the Gear Box will be built....

screenshot_577.png.6d907034bc23c8196e1c183e0d3d5bc0.png

The long cylinder is the output housing of the Gear Box and that strap looking thing bent over the housing on the left is the beginnings of the frame clamp....

Just a short update today brothers...

Another update...

Steering gear is basically done...

screenshot_580.png.c4d89a8035fa722c8411cfbb3a3365dd.png

Some minor details to add.. And might need a bit of tweaking once the firewall is built but it's basic design is complete...

Reverse angle view...

screenshot_581.png.656accd337e3b617af8f7a2c93bb8984.png

And an overall right side 3/4 view....

screenshot_582.thumb.png.7bc3086955b83e836ac469f85b4ed568.png

We are getting closer to actually building something... {chuckle}

I guess the firewall is next.... then I can adjust the gear box to it's final angle and install a steering wheel....

Anyways, the journey continues....

Thank you Brother! Well, it is off the beaten path, but welcome to the thread....

So far everything is going well, Doc is happy, Last scan showed no tumors and in 10 days I start another course of chemo... Prophylactic in nature to keep it from coming back since this type of cancer never goes away and could show up anywhere at any time... Year and a half in and I'm doing well they tell me, almost a third of the way to beating the average life expectancy of this... (5 years) God willing is all I can say....

I'll keep plugging away at something, like the title says keeping my head in the game....

Anyway a new update on the progression if this exercise....

It's time to assess the progress to date....

So far everything done has been the result of collecting pics and data off the net... Some good data and very nice pics, but since the coverage is sparse and distant many of the small details are lost in translation...

But, I have had a benefactor step forward.... A Gentleman that is kind and gracious and very generously offered me detailed images of the Marmon Wasp... Unpublished images, about 100 more or less of various sections of the car that no amount of picture taking from behind the ropes will cover...

In perusing these images, it has become painfully clear that I need to do a redesign... Not that I'm completely wrong with what I have done so far, but it would take three times more work to redesign many of the current parts to match what is now known to be real on the real thing... 3/4ths of the current design needs some level of work to bring it up to the current level of knowledge and factual imagery...

For example, take a look at the rear engine mount crossmember....

screenshot_594.png.d33ca0f8f4c411775e8f4c3272cd91f4.png

That is what it has looked like as I had no references to how it was affixed to the frame....

This is what it looks like today....

screenshot_593.png.e8f0868cf62de5328797bb28b94941a2.png

Accurate motor mounts....

Above the front side, below the aft side....

screenshot_592.png.6c26cdacf8ae635b5f851c1ade6c6aa5.png

Getting that detail added required an almost complete redesign of the cross member.... And yes I have absolute photo proof that is the configuration of the Marmon Wasp's rear motor mounts...

Almost every part I have designed to the best of my abilities and experience has issues like this on this model....

So I'm going to start a Version II of her... I will be using many of the parts I already have done as the basis of the redesign, but it will be a completely new model.... Given the new info I now have, there are too many parts that would need complete redesign to make them fit the pics I now have....

Currently I'm in the process of indexing better drawings for use as base images in SW and restarting the model...

Look at it this way, you get to see it build up from base images and I can explore the process of creating something like this...  I know it may feel like we are retracing the path we have already gone down, but in the end, we will have the most accurate model representation of the Marmon Wasp around.... (at least as accurate as I can make it)

Thank you for putting up with me and following along on this excursion into fantasy....

Version II coming soon....

EG

Very interesting project.

This is a remarkable project, despite the recent drawback Egilman. I hope your MKII will become alive soon.
All the best wishes for your health issues, keeping the mind occupied helps a lot, I think.

Cheers Rob

Thanks Rob....

Not really a drawback, it's an expansion of knowledge.... With the extra images to study it makes for an even more interesting build.... More practice as well....

An example of why I had to start over...

Frame rails... the first part modeled....

screenshot_595.thumb.png.c657aa641d5c0a587798ecd360eae4c0.png

On the left is the new version, on the right is the old version... Currently figuring out the suspension bracket that inserts into the frame rail on the forward end... (it's what those rivet's are securing inside the rail) The new pics give me a lot of that exterior detail... Back in the age this car was built, (and most cars of the period) welding wasn't something that was widely employed... Today a car like this would be completely welded together and my first drawings didn't make this delineation...

Another thing, there isn't very many washers used, it seems that generally they just bolted and nutted straight to the parts, unheard of practice today... Today you do not design or build/assemble machinery without washers... {chuckle}

Little details....

Well, the Doc is very optimistic, Me, all I can do is learn to live with it, it's not the end of the world....... Keep plugging away....

Not sure yet Brother, gots to get it designed first... Then reduce it to a scale which will preserve it's details yet allow it to be printed.... I'm still a long ways from there.....

But I'm going to finish it..... and then decide....

Just to keep myself busy, I went ahead and dropped the engine back into the chassis today as well....

screenshot_615.png.c94a4f27fb8a0a6b960910ac442b5dc6.png

All that was needed at the moment was revising the rear flange to match what is actually on the car rather than images of what was on the standard engine...

It fits beautifully... (I narrowed the frame about a inch and a half, it was part of the reason I was having problems fitting parts before)

Next up Frame Accessories, the Rear Shock brackets and the Rear Spring mounts which it turns out are completely different from what was modeled earlier...

Onwards My friends.....
