Amerigo Vespucci 1931 by schiffebastler - Mantua - scale 1:84 - Italian sail training ship build

Recommended Posts

Meanwhile, the lower shrouds of the foremast are ready so far.

First an overview.

post-1171-0-83366500-1439330313_thumb.jpg

On the next screen, the ratlines with he metal bars are quite clearly visible.

post-1171-0-70207700-1439330320_thumb.jpg

Around the top there is built a lot. You can see now on the port side of the futtock rigging with the leashings. The pendants are fixed to the ratlines.

post-1171-0-51024100-1439330330_thumb.jpg

Between the shrouds there are fixed two ropes (I don't know the english word ...) and those ropes are again fixed below the top again with some ropes.

Now even more views.

And now I am going into the summer hollidays to the Mediterranean.

So best wishes, and read on here then again in a few weeks.

Hello everybody,

long, long time since my last update. Unfortunately I hat too less time, keeping up all the forums with updates of the AV.
But now I intend to update this build log here step by step. Maybe there is still somebody, remembering me and my AV.

First I will start with an overview with all fixed shrouds.

Hello,

next are the backstays. Although they are not shown in any plan and no model kit knows it, they exist and can be seen on all pictures.
Therefore I analysed the pictures for all details and build them.

Hello,

For avoiding vibrations of the backstays, there are fixed small ropes between them.

Hi Joachim

Have only just started following your build but have been scrolling through the last 9 pages. I am absolutely gobsmacked at the quality of the workmanship and detail that you have put into this build. I will continue to follow the build as I have picked up some very good ideas on building techniques.

Hola Joachim,

just catching your log, and the only thing I can say is that it is truly amazing, wirklich schön!!

Seeing your pictures (Bild 19) I want to ask how you made or where do yo get  the nets located at the bowsprit.

Thank you all very much ! I am pleased about so much interest.

@Karleop concerning the net, they are simply from fly screens for windows, there exist different ones and I looked for some with the right grid-size.

Thanks Joachim for your fast response. In your model the fly net sees perfect but I am afraid the size for my ship is a little small, and unfortunately here you can get only one size of fly nets.

Dear colleagues,

Unfortunately I haven't shown anything here for a long time, but now I want to catch up with the state of the model.

After I had shaped the yards in the lathe, I attached the metal rings. I continued to use the lathe, the metal rings are about 0.8 mm wide and 0.05 mm thick. Since no two yards look the same, I had to determine the position of each metal ring and the respective fittings at the yards in the apron again on the basis of the pictures. I then entered the essential data in the overview sheet visible at the back.

many greetings Joachim

Before I set up all the yards in parallel, I took a look at the jibrah to see how everything works together and whether the result is as desired.

First of all a complete overview with all parts, view from behind. Here also the foot horses are to be seen quite well. The ribbons go to the front with whose help the sails are tied together at the yard. Both are attached to the handrail, to which the sail is later attached. At the moment these ribbons are still hanging off in different directions, so I have to think about it, that they hang down cleanly, I haven't found a good solution yet.

Bild_101.jpg.c82fdb8aca0fb3dca9920ebc411575c2.jpg

Rollers are recessed in the frame cams, deflection pulleys for ropes are fitted underneath.

Bild_102.jpg.64864d95f88142cec9b8b152f781a76c.jpg

A deflection pulley is also mounted on the outside of the front.

Bild_103.jpg.b5dd5e7d85bc03433bfee8975091af51.jpg

In the middle part of the yard you can see the curved fitting from behind, which is attached to the yard holder on the mast. Heavy chains are attached to the two large rings in the middle of the frame to hold and secure the frame. Under the frame hang two single blocks and combined block with two rollers.
The foot horses of the port and starboard side are tied together in the middle by means of a ribbon, in between there is the frame holder.

Bild_106.jpg.068fe58e1d7cea528e9be16d86e5ceaa.jpg

Below the frame are a number of brackets with thin pulleys (somewhat difficult to see) over which the ropes run, which are then steered on deck by means of the blocks attached in the middle of the frame.

The next step is the lower topsail yard

Bild_50.jpg.bca38fb5836c98a72260f87e755d31a4.jpg

Now a close-up view of the middle part of the yard. At the bottom, somewhat hidden are round fittings in which the frame is attached to the mast, then two pulleys. A little bit unusual seems the attachment of the foot horses in this area. While the foot horses are fastened to eyelets via thimbles at the yard cams, they are tied directly to the yard in the middle area.

Bild_51.jpg.5a45a848d15112901e282497d111117e.jpg

A divided fitting with several holes is attached to the top of the frame on the views of the frame cams. Here the sheets of the Obermars sails are attached by chains, they cannot really be adjusted, only by a ring, through which the chain later still runs, the point of attack can be changed easily. In modern square sailers, the upper mars sails are set by pulling the upper marsrah upwards.

And now the sails continue. The sails from the kit were not usable and also not the right sizes. So I made a better design, which corresponds quite well to the original.

I used a colleague's manufacturing method.

First paint the fabric with diluted tensioning lacquer, mark the sails and cut them out.

I spent many weeks sewing sails in autumn. Since my wife had never operated a sewing machine before, I took the part myself, learned how to handle it and then sewed these sails for many, many hours. Of course, there are also 23 sails that are at stake.

This is now the result of the sewing orgy.

In the meantime all leks are hemmed and wires are inserted in the side and foot leeks. I painted everything with Ponal and ironed it with an iron.

Then all reef tapes and doublings were sewn on, glued on and the edges sewn with the sewing machine. Some basic information came from a plan of Franco Gay. Based on this, I made actuel plans. At least you can still find everything on photos today.
