  1. Belated thanks for looking in Omar and for your appreciation and to you Steven, I'm pleased you like the sails. Regards, B.E.
  2. I did taper my planks both fore and aft below the wale and I made quite a long shallow taper, the exact proportions of which now elude me but 1/64 inch seems an incredibly small adjustment Martin from the overall width of your planks. I can't correlate directly as I think we used different plank widths, my standard boxwood planks were 4.5mm wide and I fitted 10 between the wale and the stern post along the counter bottom. Pity you've got to remove your four strakes, but as we all know once our eye has detected something we're not happy with, we can't let it rest. Look forward to seeing the revised arrangement. B.E.
  3. Hi Matti, I can't believe I haven't looked in on your build since Page 92 and missed the completion party. Still I've now remedied that and have enjoyed reading the closing stages of your wonderful build. I've always loved the lower mast/standing rigging only configuration of display ever since I saw a wonderful drawing by Landström in his book The ship. If you have it, it is drawing 380 on page 169, of a French 56 gunner. Many congratulations Matti, a job well done. Regards, B.E.
  4. Oh that heart sinking moment when something you have been working on for ages pings off into the ether never to be seen again - except when you have re made the part, when it suddenly re-appears. As someone who can only gaze with amazement on your metal working dexterity Ian, I think I would go for the soft option of having the cover on one with the workings displayed on the other, but then as someone who can only dream of producing such a great little item, I would wouldn't I B.E.
  5. You've done the right thing John in re-doing those seizings, lucky it is the smallest set of shrouds you were working on. There can't be many of us who have not had to take a step or two backwards at times during our builds. B.E.
  6. Beautiful detailing Thomas, very fine work indeed. B.E.
  7. Beautiful work on the bulkhead Augie and 'work slowly and nothing gets destroyed in the process' should be a model makers mantra. B.E.
  8. Nice detailing Timmo, your blackwood items look very good, I especially like the anchor buoys. B.E.
  9. Another fine whaler in the making, some very fine detailing you have produced there Bruce, nicely done. B.E.
  10. It stands for Medium density fibre board. As it happens I have been sawing some sheets of 25mm thick boards today, the dust is very fine and there is plenty of it. When planing mdf it comes off as dust rather than shavings, and I would suggest that a mask is worn when working it. B.E.
  11. Neat work on the standing rigging John, love that last but one 3/4 bow shot of her - impressive. B.E.
  12. Why do the bulkheads need reducing in thickness Herb; as I recall mine slotted onto the false keel just about right and I didn't have to touch the faces. mdf produces a very fine dust and is considered hazardous to health, but you'll find that when it comes to fairing the bulkheads it's a nice material to work with. B.E.
  13. An impressive series of photo's Nils, at full size they show what a stunning model you have created. B.,E.
  14. Fine work Grant, you certainly seem to have taken to this scratch build business. B.E.
  15. I will be interested to see what conclusions you come to with this build Peter, I too had issues with the kit provided stern, as I did with the rigging. Look forward to seeing your progress. Regards, B.E.
  16. A great set of yards Ray, you've made a great job of the studding booms, nice and fine relative to the yards, so often they look over-scale. B.E.
  17. Both pristine and weathered you've made a great job on the hull Frank and that deck colour is spot on. You surely are working your magic again with Alert. Regards, B.E.
  18. Fine work on the masts and tops Mike, and I just love those latest series of shots of her, your attention detail is very evident. the close-up shots of the seized and served strops are impressive, I really must raise my game in that area. Regards, B.E.
  19. Great to see an update Ian, Unicorn is looking fine and it's good to see some more examples of your innovative approach to ship modelling. Cheers, B. E.
  20. Very well done Peter, a Swan to be proud of. I also look forward to seeing your completion photo''s and the start of your upcoming Pickle build. Regards, B.E.
  21. Just enjoyed a read thro' your log Jon, what a fine job you have made of your build, and what a valuable work of reference for those building Rattlesnake - great stuff. B.E.
  22. I love to see your framing Mark, and I so admire your determination to get things right. Regards, B.E.
  23. Looks good Mike, a sound base for the all important second layer. I added a strengthening strip behind the jigsaw join to give some stability, didn't want to risk it springing at some later stage, and it doesn't show below the qd. B.E.
  24. That's an impressive bit of carving there Martin; I didn't insert treenails in the wales either, but I think you will find that your Top and Butt will show thro' sufficiently to indicate your extra effort. Well done B.E.
