  1. Half of the exhaust stubs and their shroud are now finished. The stubs are oval at the inboard end and taper to rectangular at the outboard end. I used a piece of shaped dowel to form the inboard end; the joint between the two sections of pipe ended up being pretty much invisible. Sometime in the near future, I will have to repeat this process for the starboard side.
  2. Yes, and each one consists of two parts, so yeah, making them both neat and uniform is another task I have yet to master.
  3. They might be, but one of the biggest appeals of card models is their low cost, and after-market parts are not cheap.
  4. Not much to show for this past week. I finished the wing fairings. These are always hard to get "just right," and these aren't the best I have ever done. And an additional ventral scoop and some miscellaneous blisters. Right now I am in the process of assembling the exhaust stubs. Fun. 🙄 Cheers!
  5. Add a few pictures and it'll be a build log!
  6. I made this modification many, many moons ago, so my memory may be a bit fuzzy, but I seem to recall that the proper location for that beam is actually forward of the kit bulkheads. You can check this with the false quarterdeck to see whether the beam lies beneath the opening for the quarterdeck grating or not.
  7. Here's hoping that your PT handlers go gentle with you!
  8. Greg, Would it be unkind to point out the little bit of over-spray from the hull number masks? This is such an exceptional model that it would be a shame to not touch that up, unless of course it is left there intentionally. Cheers!
  9. There used to be two such shops in the US. One was Paper Models International; the original owner sold the business over a decade ago and the new owner has done nothing with it. The other still exists -- Paper Model Store. But again, the owner hasn't updated his website in ages and now seems to be selling only a few kits through eBay.
  10. I was wondering the same thing. This sort of material would be appropriate for anyone scratch building modern pleasure craft.
  11. Marcle Models sells card kits in the UK, but since most models are published in Eastern Europe, it shouldn't be too expensive to order directly from the publishers. Kartonowa Kolekcja only ships to Poland, but their kits are available elsewhere, e.g. WAK or GPM.
  12. Not too shabby! I plan to do the RN version as well -- it just looks so snazzy!
  13. The "blotchiness" is less obvious at a distance. I suppose if one wanted, the etched deck planks could be replaced with some very thin strip wood, like holly.
  14. Welcome aboard, Gill! That is a fine starter set you have purchase and will set you up well for enjoying this hobby for years to come. Cheers!
  15. The "strange circle" is the helmsman's cockpit. If you search online for images of America, you'll get some idea of what it should look like.
  16. Great to see an unboxing of one of these kits.
  17. Are you trying to cut through the entire plank in one motion? If so, shaving it away with small cuts made away from the hull will work better.
  18. I think you're going to need to provide some more information in order to get the desired answer, e.g. kit/scratch, scale, exact area in question, and possibly photos.
  19. What is meant by "better"? If you intend to paint your model, then the type of wood and plank length are not critical.
