  1. thanks Jesselee....still a lot more to do.......see you in 2014! I did that with the Gothenborg Bob. I can do what I intend to do with the Danmark diagrams........I'm going to bring the parts panel diagrams to a copy place, and have them blown up. I still have those I still have a few ideas kicking around in this old{er} brain box of mine. I think it best to keep them there for the time being though thanks for the thought
  2. she looks great! paint will also aide in losing some of it.......not to worry! got some great lines there!
  3. I have never worked with it......judging by all I have read, I don't think I ever will {I have plenty of India Ink } your work this year has been fantastic......you have a beautiful hull. I'll look forward in seeing her in her skin in 2014! have a great evening watching the ball drop........I think I will just watch the clock........programing stinks since the Dick Clark days
  4. I don't blame him Augie.......the percussion from the fire works must have started early :D :D No Sjors.........#9 & #10 will stay in my head ........where they belong! 2014 will be aimed at clearing up the clutter from 2013. I can't lay it all on one year though.....because it was accumulative. but I am hoping for a happier, healthier Wharf! sage advice Mark, although my 'year in prospective' has uncovered a bigger problem than it showed. I will have a update for this soon. ..................a plank'in I will go I do have some good news on the broken down SUV........as was told, the trans had a total melt down. it is being rebuilt. due to the Holidays and the problems with Fed-Ex and UPS {here in the US}, it has been hard to find the parts, since they stopped making this style of Isuzu for quite a few years. I was told though, that we could have the truck back as early as Friday, worse case scenario, would be the beginning of next week. I am hoping for the Friday choice....or we'll have to endure another week end {I go back to work} I'll keep my fingers crossed!
  5. I think you've done a fine job of it........you are the ratline king! looks like you'll be a centurion by 2014.......congrats!
  6. sanding will take care of that........you'll be painting it anyway. your best bet would be to go through your wood and pick out the thicker stuff, and save it for the bottom. or better yet........reverse it. save the thinner stuff for the bottom..........the copper plates will make up for the difference
  7. thanks John you know......all these years of .....put it up.........and then ......take it down....is really starting to wear on this poor soul I'm ready to just tell her to "pick a room" :D planking has turned out to be everything I thought it would be.........SLOW!!!! hopefully, the next time you see them, they will ALL be done. then they will not only look better.......but I'll be very happy!!! :)
  8. thank you Lawrence....... this was part of my first experiment in the replication of hulls from parts panels. I did the same with the Holiday trio, but I have a sad feeling that three hull, is the best those templates will do. the only thing I wished I would have done.....was straighten.....or even invert the curvature of the bow line. now it's the fore deck and aft deck.....that's my next frontier. thanks for the comment and looking in........hope you follow along
  9. you seriously need to make this a 'cut-a-way'......this is just too beautiful to cover up!
  10. thanks for the head's up Keith........I didn't know that definitely something to take advantage of I did a bit more today......but the admiral wants to put away as much of the Christmas decorations around the house as possible......so, I guess I know what I'll be doing later.......buggers! here is where I am at the moment. this is Larry.........the first eight rows of planking is Obechi......the six additional rows of planking is basswood. easy to tell, by the way it sands out. Moe and Curly are past the eight row mark...........Curly has begun to receive the basswood. I also thought I'd show the fruits of this past scavenger hunt....not much, but I didn't go store hopping either {what am I saying.......this amount of exuberance, with the scourge of man, would have any admiral jumping for joy}.....I must truly be mad the two wider sheet are for the United States......for the spar deck. once that is done, I can get a better idea of how much skimping I can do with the gun deck planking. update for this soon there are twelve narrower sheets there....they will be used for the Harbor build. these hinges will be for the boulogne Etaples........they were the last on the peg. you can get these same hinges in most of the Midwest kits, that require them. I bought this molding, hopefully to use on the Harbor build. I first saw some of this scribed wood, when I was working on the Ambroid kit of the B&M snow plow. in checking this out, I found that there are a few places where this style of wood can be purchased. I remember using ambroid cement in my youth: ambroid.com
  11. it was because of these large builds, that I took the airbrush back up.........loving it ever since!
  12. wish I knew of a remedy...........only one I have is to make up a mock mast and shrouds......and practice hope you had a great Christmas.........and a happy new year!
  13. looks super Sjors! not worries about starting the Aggie on time.........building that hull frame will be a nice diversion from rigging {at least that's what I kept telling myself :D }
  14. I will Wayne........although I got only a little done today. I'll pull double shift tomorrow..........promise!
  15. thanks John.........say that to my fingers though.........they are beginning to get permanent dimples from all the pins :D I have gotten further with their planking........although not as fast as I would like. I'm using the pins with the round heads......the bad thing is that when I go to pull them out.......the round heads come off. I have so many that this has happened to....I'm just throwing them out. I bought a container of what they call 'map pins'.......they are much shorter than what I'm currently using. the oak plywood isn't bad at all....the pins go in easily due to the soft core. The hull dubbed Moe though is a bit harder, being made totally of the regular plywood. I did manage to get out there.......an attempt to do a little scavenger hunting, but I was amazed at how fast the stores are switching gears. the Christmas displays are almost gone at the Hobby Lobby I frequent.........only 2 - 3 isles, compared to what there was a few weeks ago. I took a tour through the doll house stuff as well, only picking up the last two remaining packages of hinges......and a package of some really cool molding, that I will find use for. I have the site bookmarked that Andy had posted to Tom, on his build, so I'm not out in the cold in that dept. it does worry me that I may have to wait, to get the finer details, but it won't stop me from getting the majority of the boats built.......most of this will come from nautical sites......the obvious parts. the display of flat stock had been ravaged as well. they had plenty of Balsa sheeting........but I don't want to use that....way too soft for me. I found only two sheets of the 1/16 x 4 x 24 basswood.......I looked to see if they carried wider stuff.......but no dice! so, I ended up buying 12 of the 3 inch wide sheets. I haven't looked at how I'm going to to set up the deck platform jig yet........that will better tell me how the sheeting will be cut. one thing is for sure.......they won't have that hole in the middle of the deck :D Ahhhhhh..........but what of that cover, I had made for the Boulogne? this kinda kills the intent I had for it, but you never know....it could serve quite nicely as a pilot house roof! the purchase of this wood.......I toast to my younger son, Kevin. his Christmas present to me this year was a $100.00 gift card to Hobby Lobby.........his heart, bigger than his brain. he also made it a point to go with me when I went......I can tell he still has a desire to get into some sort of hobby. I told him, it didn't matter what his interest is in.....He'd have loads of fun in whatever he chose........plastic models........model rocketry.....HO scale trains or cars. we made the rounds,,,,we had a great time
  16. the deck is looking real good now John........all the detail bits look great! looking more and more like a whaler now!
  17. I need to order more of the .5 mm thick planking sooner or later. I've done a couple of my builds using planking that is over 1 mm thick, and I found it a bit cumbersome.......they don't behave as well in conforming to the deck curvatures. the only thing I've noticed with using the thin strip, is the moisture content in the white glue I use, tends to cause the strip to curl a little......you need to keep pressing them down as they dry. I agree with you Dragzz........you use what you have........I just thought I'd point out something I realized........here I am doing a smaller scale build, and I'm still planking with 5 mm wide strip.....something funny there to me.......I think this is something that is overlooked at times......either a person would like to enhance their build in this way.........or the thought of this process taking twice as long to do....changes their minds.
  18. that's the spirit Kevin!!! the one thing about plastic I hated.....all the pin marks and impressions. I use the Testors putty. the last tube I bought, must have been on the shelf a long time.......I had to knead the hell out of the tube. so much, in fact, that the crimp on the end began to come undone! the other sad fact is that I don't use it too much....I'll probably end up having to do it all over again. your kit doesn't look too bad though.......I haven't seen too much of it so far
  19. are you going to do scale planking? one thing I always see in a kit, is that they always include .5mm planking, that is 5 mm wide. if it were to be scale planking, they might have been better to include 2 - 3 mm wide planking. as far as cutting the length goes.....I take the easy way out....I cut them to the length of two ribs. I draw lines at each rib......sometimes I will draw lines in the centers between each one as well. I do a center line down the middle for the king plank{s}. you can't really go by these measurements though......even the manufacturer can be a bit off with these measurements. then you could mass produce the planking and do the calking around the edges. I use an archive pen for that......India Ink. I have used crayon as well....but it's a bit messy.
  20. super progress Piet......I had to re-read......in the back of my mind, I was thinking that it would be a bear to get that hatch cover and inner tub detail done with all that in place your dad must really be smiling by now!
