A good wipedown cleaned up much of it. The a bit of flat varnish took care of the shine. I'll do touch ups in the next day or so. I'll not get much done Question.. what's the best way to fit the glass part of the windows? The instructions say to "trim" but how? Will a file work? I realize once I get them to fit, I'll need to remove fingerprints and alcohol seems to work well. Not much will be done sometime tomorrow as there's places to go and people to see...

You have indeed been busy, Daniel. Congratulations on all counts. Are you now headed up the next deck level or a new project?

Finally, an update. Been a bit of a stretch for me on the bow. Lots of tiny parts that if one is not careful, they break or go flying off into the "ether" never to be seen again. Luckily, Chris provided extras. My only comment is that I should have left either painting or the mounting of the deck bits until last. With all the black things got a bit hard to see after a while. I think I need to upgrade my lighting at the build bench. Overall, I'm pretty happy with it. Here's the photos of where I am and then off to work on the stern. On second thought.... I need to do quite a bit of touch up on the paint and/or a lot of dusting. Macro photography is not our friend either. And the flash wiped out the color in some areas. That's my excuse and I'm sticking with it.

As always, your details at the small scales you build at just blow me away. Just incredible.

Harold Hahn method

That's very true. Thanks for pointing that out. -
Harold Hahn method
mtaylor replied to Essayons's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
If I were to do another Hahn plan model, I seriously think that I would cut out the individual pieces for each frame and then put them together. Even "common" woods are getting a bit pricey. -
I have one of their lions for my Belle Poule and trying to figure how it's mounted. I'm also considering the Bellona model and wooden figurehead and same question. On both, there's wood between the legs and also extends out and down beyond the legs. I'm thinking I'll need to carve away some the material to fit the stem. Anyone know? Here's a photo of the lion so you can see what I'm talking about.

There's interesting stories on all those escort carriers. Smaller than "normal" carriers they were originally designed for convoy escort duty. But they also filled other rolls with transporting aircraft from the States to remote islands and locations to returning them back for overhaul. Wikipedia is a good place to start. Maybe start with Gambier Bay or "escot carriers".

Harold Hahn method
mtaylor replied to Essayons's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
Well, Hahn admitted that his framing is "stylized" and gave a few reasons... simpler to construct, the opening between frames gave the hint of what the framing looked like and also allowed his cutaway areas to be built easily. He also admitted to it being very wasteful of wood. -
Peter, Mark recently passed away I'm sad to say. Do a seach on the Nuestra Senora Pilar using the search feature and see who else has built it. They may have used the same paint.

Harold Hahn method
mtaylor replied to Essayons's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
His method is based on doing your drawings for the framing. Then you glue up some blanks, attach the framing plans and cut. It also involves making the build board and extending the framing top ends out to fit into the build board. Have a look at my Licorne build as it was done using the Hahn method. The link is in my signature. Also, I did find this video: -
Cutting out gunports
mtaylor replied to Etcher's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
Having done it both ways, my preference is to cut the planks before installing such that there's a bit of the plank hanging into the gunport. A bit of sanding with the sanding stick or file cleans them up. For the complete planking and then cutting, I would drill holes in the plank to allow a small saw to be inserted such as one of the Xacto #21 blades (I think that's the number... it;'s a type of keyhole saw). You could also use a short bit of scroll saw blade in an Xactro handle.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
