Thanks guys for the comments and "likes".

Mike, after seeing yours, I'll be happy to have mine come out as well.

Had the pleasure of spending some time with Chuck, and seeing his work, and I'm eager to get back at it.

Back at it after a travel break. I've done the stern frames and the framing of the stern ports. Fitting and placing those sills and lintels was a fussy business, even using the stern drawing as a template, as suggested by Chuck.

Now the fun begins. Time to start the planking.

Looking great, I am at the same stage--- it took me three attempts to get the stern correct--- my problem???   I never read the excellent instructions that Chuck had written until the third time I did it ha ha ha

Great work Bob.

Those stern ports looked like they would be a little, as you put it "fussy", but they look perfect.

Enjoy your planking. :)

Thanks so much Ian, Rusty and all of the "likes". I'm sure that I must have done at least 3 of each of the sills and lintels in an effort to get all the angles and bevels to a passable state.

Some progress to report. I completed the prep for planking by adding the square tuck stern piece and fillers and then painting the ports. I opened my last ever bottle of Pollyscale ATSF red for the ports.

I then did the first layer of the wales, which was pretty straightforward. Now, it's on to the topside planking.

Bob,

your build sequences look clear, straight foreward and very well executed. You`ve got a real "gem" of a cutter on your slipway...

Would it be worth a thought to do the hull below the wales in lapstrake planking ? (like Lee had Chosen for his cutter "Alert" )

Laying that first wale may have been 'straightforward' (for you) but it gives us a great mind's eye view of what she'll look like.  Beautifully neat, mate.

Thanks so much Nils, Augie, Dirk and Joe for the nice comments and also all of the "likes".

Nils, the prototype for Chuck's design does not have lapstrake planking and I'm going to stay with that.

Joe, I only wish that I had stocked up on the paint. I don't have many bottles left.

Nils,

Cheerful was NOT clinker planked.  I know that its a simple thing to just think that all cutters were planked that way (like Alert).  But its simply not true.  This class of cutters was carvel planked.   Just as the contemporary model of Surly shows.   I suppose that folks could clinker plank the cutter but it would be historically incorrect.

Planking is now underway. I have completed the port side topside planking ( to the point of rough sanding). The caulking is simulated by pencil on one side and end of each plank. Since I've never been able to accurately plank between ports by adding individual planks, I use a method of building up units of planking , which allows me to get perfectly straight edges and correct sizing to obtain the 1/64" rebates around the ports. Where required, the planks are pre-bent to shape before gluing up the unit.

Now it's on to the starboard side to repeat the process.

Bob - Everything looks great! I did the area between the ports like you did, using built up planking. Works great as long as the pieces are pre-bent where necessary. I'm looking forward to your getting ahead of me. It will help me as I plod along while learning from you.
