Indeed, a mast top is not a crowsnest.

When I was young. I (and probably many of us) dreamed to be a pirate, exploring the horizon from the crowsnest, high in the mast.
Now I discover that I sat actually in a simple mast top. ☹️
My childhood dream, shattered to pieces 😲 😆

Patrick,

Nice work with mast - reminds me of the Vasa I did some time back. I have the mast parts from the museum if you like - I can find and post them here? Looks as if you have it just right however.

Cheers,

Building the mast tops

Mast tops
The size ??
In this era you will find all sizes : small, big,  high, low.

Looks like 2 armed soldiers or sailors should have enough space in it.

And the  "supports" under the mast top are usually longer than the bottom diameter of the mast top (white arrows)
The top of the main mast is usually slightly larger than that of the fore mast.

First did some testing with paper before buildig the "baseplate"

20200728_153350.thumb.jpg.9679d3900f137b571a4a43947c254b73.jpg

I first do the main mast until the base plate is ready, and then do the same with the fore mast.

Enough space? It looks to me that their legs are cut off to create space 😁.

Maybe that's the reason that the right man needs some boose, to daze a bit. I have the impression that the left man needs some as well. Luckily it is coming.

If we look at this complete drawing. Life on board of a 16th century ship was fun.... 🙈
Eating, drinking and the "other pleasures" in life.
The only one who looks serious is the captain.

Continue with the construction of the mastops.
This is more thinking time than construction time. The intention is to make something with these as examples.

(Start at the top left clockwise Mataro model, Vasa, Mary Rose, Vasa)

Added these

Now I have to make 80 small planks (40 for each masttop) . None of them are identical.

It is useful to take a photo now and then. And then take a good look at it
I see that the mast top of the fore mast is actually a bit too big. So I'm going to rebuild this top a bit smaller.

Better now than later ;)

Those tops look very good, Patrick.

It's hard to tell from the photo whether the foretop is too big because it's closer to the camera than the maintop is. Just check it by eye to be sure, or take a photo from directly side-on, so you don't get the camera messing up the proportions. Otherwise you may be giving yourself unnecessary work.

Thanks Steven

The fore top is only 2mm smaller in diameter than the main top.
This really doesn't look good and the conversion is now underway.

These are the "charms" of scratch building a model without plans, haha.

Fair enough. 2mm isn't much - it's probably hard to see the difference between the two mast tops - so it's probably right to do all that work again (sigh) tomake a new top that looks right on the foremast.

I do know what you mean . . .  :default_wallbash:If I had a dollar for every change I've had to make in a scratch build, I'd have - several dollars.

Hiya Backer, I guess you use a scroll saw for the mast tops which one, great work by the way love the wood staining to give the weathered look.

Hello,

With the main mast top ready and a smaller fore mast top under construction, it is time to think about the main and fore topmasts.

In many drawings the top mast and flagpole are in one piece. A simplification of the 16th century painters or was this reality.

 (In one piece about 15    Seperately : 1  )

20200907_165647.thumb.jpg.ac66c800fceb71972aa093cc14122395.jpg

Masts in this period could not be dismantled.
The different parts of the mast were firmly attached to each other How? not a clue yet ...

Mast tops

Making top masts on my home-made lathe.  To my surprise it worked out quite well.

20200905_140707.thumb.jpg.cabcda7f7be859de908b98541f94e5a2.jpg

Determine the length
The masts in the Aeropiccola drawings are quite correct in length.

20200907_164053.thumb.jpg.d28a9eb6d54243afedfc5fcc6f3c88e8.jpg20200907_164041.thumb.jpg.dc2c636f04cbc6e4c59a17fd02b018ec.jpg

The length of my top masts are long enough to use both methods. Top mast flagpole separately or in one piece ( not yet decided what methode).

To be continued, thanks for following.

Thanks for this nice French text. Great that you speak four languages (always handy)
I once learned French as a second language at school.
Some German during my military service in Germany
And some English in between.

Looks they had interesting models.
Too bad the company no longer exists. You can apparently still contact them according to the website

In the meantime, the second mast top is finally ready. Now continue with the top part of the main and fore mast.

And now we make a "ezelshoofd"  (donkey head in Englisch )  What does a donkey have in common with a mast part?

Patrick,

I have only just discovered this great build.  Congratulations.

Just to add a little to your history:

The reason that the Pelican was renamed was that Drake's sponsor was Sir Chistopher Hatton whose coat of arms included a golden hind.  Hatton's home was Hatton Gardens in London, now the site of the famous diamond dealer and where, in 2016, the largest robbery in British history took place.

That's a much more interesting name than the English one - just boring "mast cap". The Italians, on the other hand, call it a testa di moro - "Moor's head". But we make up for it with deadeyes - because they look a bit like a skull. The French call them caps de mouton - sheep's caps (unless it's an old name incorporating the Latin capitum - "head". Somehow sheep's head sounds more poetic.
