HMS Victory by GrandpaPhil - Mantua - Scale 1:98 - Kit-Bash

Recommended Posts

Thank you very much!

I’m debating how I want to make the mouldings, carve from 1/16” stock, or make them from card like I did on the bow?

I am leaning towards the card at this point.

Thank you all for the comments and the likes!

Merry Christmas to all!

I am using card stock strips to give the impression of mouldings (due to the small scale).  It looks a little whopper jawed (hillbilly for crooked) in the picture, but that is because of alignment issues from merging a kit with the plans from the AOTS.  It should come out well.

Thank you very much!  Merry Christmas!

I will admit though, I’ve been pretty much playing a game of make it up as I go along.  I did that with the Prince de Neufchatel too.

It is working though.  I’ve been having a lot of fun.  I’m learning a lot, too.

This is a great learning experience for my next project (either the Edmund Fitzgerald, the Triton or the Winchelsea).

I have the mouldings on the aft section of the starboard side done.  I am getting ready to start the midship portion.

The starboard midships portion of the mouldings are done.  The 1/16” second from the top part of the trim extends all the way to the bow, but the piece that I used is already painted black, so you can’t see it in the picture, but it is there.

The mouldings on the starboard side are done.

I discovered that I made the forward bulwarks incorrectly.  I will fully address that issue when I make all the railings and the timberheads.  In the meantime I filled in the cutouts that I made.

This is a learning project and I already knew that there were many flaws in this model, so I will correct what I can, within reason and just move on.  I will remember my mistakes for future projects so I can do better.

The midships portion is done.  I ran the 1/16” strip all the way forward (it’s painted black, so not particularly visible, but it is there).

Now, to finish the aft part of the mouldings.

Thank you very much for all the likes!

I finished making the aft portion of the mouldings on the port side.

I found out something useful from looking at pictures of the Victory as she is in Portsmouth (thank you everyone who posts pictures of your trip there, I really appreciate them).  The mouldings are painted the same as their backgrounds.

This means that painting them will be really easy, and will hide my mistakes better, lol.

We had a great Christmas!  I hope yours was great, too!  Happy New Year!

The port side ladder is made and installed.  I used strips of poster board that were layered and cut to size.

And now for something completely different:

I mostly finished painting a Call To Arms British Grenadier from the American War of Independence (AWI).

This isn’t the best paint job that I’ve ever done, but it will do.  I shaded it too dark.  I used the strong tone (Army Painter) instead of the soft tone (also Army Painter), oops.

We’ll call it a grenadier on campaign.

I am waiting for it to dry before I highlight it.

I made the lower part of the starboard side ladder on Victory too.

Your build is coming along really nicely! I also enjoy the tangent figure paintings as well! Where do you pick up your figures? I was thinking about picking up some 1/64 English sailors for my upcoming Alert build (assuming that I can find some).

I bought mine off E-Bay.  Those are 54mm (1/32).

Chris Watton (Vanguard Models) is making 1/64 figures of Lord Cochrane and Lord Nelson.  They look awesome, but I haven’t bought them yet.

Otherwise, there are plenty of 28mm (1/56) figures that can be found out there.  Some can be used as is, others would require some conversion work.  They might be too large though.

You should do  1/72 scale soldiers like the ones Airfix used to sell  - I used to be well into those  had about 500  at one stage  drove my late mum  nuts  doing battles all over the floor.

I just purchased this kit on eBay...I hope to do as nice of a job as you are doing some day!

also I picked these up off eBay as well...might be a sin having them on the HMS Victory though 😝 D793399B-CE9A-492A-9FC5-F0B78D8A31CB.thumb.jpeg.381e9c53d9a064784de71e8fc2ef7de2.jpeg

I could never paint the 1/72 figures well.  I would like to learn because I would like to get a set of Daniel Dusek’s 1/72 sailors for future models.

I do however, have a whole slew of 28mm figures that I need to paint, lol.

Happy New Year everyone!

I used my new contour gauge for the first time to take the contour of the upper hull for the starboard fenders.

I made two of them from 1/16” basswood.

After trying to glue both, I realized that the second fender didn’t look like the first one, so it got pulled off and slimmed down.

Time to make fenders for the port side!
