You’re doing nice work on your cutter, I’m sure the skills learned will transfer to Winnie. Just remember it’s single planked so the work will require patience as I’ve learned on Cheerful.

Planking on the port side slowly proceeds, as I put planks on from the keel and the main wale, I kept adjusting the marking out for the plank lines and it seemed to help.

Hello playmates, whoops, sorry fellow modellers, I'm back on my Cutter and taking a break from planking Winnie. She sure is big!

Anyway, I've been trying to sort out the aft companion way, but I've made two that when placed did not look right 🤔 so I started a third and this time it also includes a skylight  for the Masters cabin. Sorry but I'm having the same problems as popeye (Denis) and my camera on my phone has stopped working,  waiting for new phone, so photos coming soon. I will be working my way through the deck fittings for a while. So I'll see you all next time👍

A little bit more done, made hatch coamings and main hatch grating, the companion way

and skylight are well on the way.

I've also began to put the moulding along the bulwarks 

the photo below is a test as my new phone camera has a macro setting.

Next time I'm going to have a crack at making either a windlass or a capstan, I'm leaning more towards a windlass.

A cutter most likely would have a windless and not a capstan, so good choice.

 

Your deck is looking good, nice work.  I like your moulding, and your macro photo.  Probably interesting to drop down to this size from the huge Winnie.

Thanks Glenn,  I have been scouring the internet for  pictures of windlass so I have some sort of idea of what to do. I'm also thinking of maybe mocking up a different companion hatch.

It is nice to be able to have a break from planking Winnie, it seems never ending as she's so big.

You might take a look at Chuck's 1:48 windlass kit for Cheerful ( instructions )

 

Even if you don't use the kit, it may be useful as a design idea..

Returning to my Cutter for a bit of relief from the smell of the glue whilst working on my Panther non ship build.

 There's been change of mind concerning the companion way, instead of a deckhouse I'm just doing a simple coaming and a ladder down to below. Consequently I've cut out the false deck to allow for a platform to set the ladder on. I've still got to tidy the hole up.

For some reason macro mode makes the Cedar very yellow. 

also have cut the small components for one side of the skylight, which is staying. Needless to say this has put back the making of the windlass.

Just a little bit done, the window frames on the skylight have been glued, they'll need sanding when the glue's cured

I've given the deck one coat of poly

I'll get the platform and ladder sorted next time

Very nice job on the skylight! I’m quite interested to see how you retrofit that deck. I regret not planking those areas; but I will on the next build.

With great difficulty, I've had four attempts before I got one I was satisfied with. 

This was #1, a bit too small as you could see into the open hull past the edges. 

#2 not as poor but I wasn't happy and #3 never even made it down the hole.

#4 made in two pieces and glued to some cross beams wedged and glued between the hull and the false keel. It's about 3 times as wide as the hatch and really tested my dexterity to fiddle it in to position. 

I'm  re-doing the ladder. 

The lower deck is now in and 32mm below the upper which if scaled up to full size would be somewhere between 4'11 and 5'1

Next time I'll do this before the top deck but I wasn't planning this companion way.

I remade the ladder,

but I'm not sure wether it's any better than the first one, although it

doesn't look as bad in the photos as it looks in life.

still I'm going to knock another one up, just so I've got the choice 😏

will be starting on the rest of the deck fittings, with the windlass, main and bowsprit bits first. Hopefully the weather will be fine enough for me to get my table saw outside to cut some timber for said parts.

you can just see a bit of a twist in the ladder in the above photo.

Hello again, a fine sunny morning here and the table saw was out on the backyard. I cut a 40 x 65mm piece of pine into a selection of different size sticks.

These will be used  for the deck furniture that will be painted 

first was the windlass supports, and that's as much as I got done because  the Admiral and my eldest daughter decided we needed some fresh air, so ended up going for a 5 mile walk. I'm going to re-read know to make an octagonal stick from a square one and get the windlass barrel done.

Hi again,  so I did my homework and found the post on how to turn a square stick into an octagonal one, and after several abysmal and downright awful attempts, (scrap bin was well fed with this little project) I've got one that is acceptable. 

I'm still making the cap end pieces and have still got to make the ratchet part .

also need to add the details like the holes for the levers.

The deck furnishings continue, albeit slowly, tonight I've roughed together the main mast bits.

sanding is still required. 

I'm using some scrap AYC and still cannot get over how nice it is to work with.

At home today because of the rain, so thought I would make the bowsprit. Using my cordless drill and sandpaper  I have got a basic shape

also painted the windlass supports and the skylight body

still got to make the ratchet and the bowsprit bits, which I'm thinking of putting the pal for the windlass on.
