HMS Sphynx 1775 by Alex M - Scale 1/48 - English 20-Gun Frigate

Recommended Posts

Alex, how did you create the molding on the rail with the tapering and curvature?  Did you use scrapers or something else?  A bit of a tutorial would be excellent.

Thank you druxey!

Dowmer, I can't use scrapers due to curvature and tapering. here are tools I have used for moulds and nearly completted second upper rail

One can use scrapers - to a point. But beyond that it's miniature cutting tools and files. I found it easiest to glue the rail to a backing piece of wood so that I could hold and turn it without risk to the workpiece or my fingers. The finished piece is soaked in rubbing alcohol to release it from the backing.

Thank you Matt! I did cut the moldings, it is easier and I think this was also real practice

Alex is correct; the moldings are interrupted by the cathead supporter. This is one of the few parts in the ship that curves in all planes. Beautifully done, Alex!

Oh, you will have fun doing those!  The compound angles of the recesses for the rails are a headache, but I'm sure you'll do a great job on them. Those rails look gorgeous and flow just as they should. Well done!

Good morning,

only small update here. I have diassembled the head and began to glue the pieces permanent in to place. Before I mount the upper rails I have a question: mostly contemporary models show the timber heads of upper rail black and I'm not sure if I shal do so. Here an image I have manipulated in photoshop :)
