Yeah, wouldn't want to have Andy miss his leadoff spot!

Good work on marmots :D   One comment about Coors beer though.  Oh, sorry, can't write that here.

We do our best for it.

But sometimes you have to tell something about his build…..

I suggest we not let this thread die until Augie hits at least 100 pages...

That's what I was thinking - marmots and beer, or whatever it takes! :D

We do our best for it.

But sometimes you have to tell something about his build…..

You are right Sjors, but just about all of the accolades have already been heaped on Augie.  This could require more creativity...  Augie's work has transended superb or excellent, it's Augdacious!

Oh yes..., the build. I do have a serious question for you Augie - regarding your build. Based on your experience with the Syren, did this build influence you in your next ship selection in regard to scale, wood type, manufacturer, POB, POF, etc... or was your next selection based on some other criteria?

I'm really enjoying and learning from my current build, but it will definitely influence my next purchase from many aspects.

Regards,

Larry

Definitely Larry.  Scale was important.  I've just barely gotten used to 3/16" and preferred not to go smaller.  As for wood type, I want to stay away from basswood which means I may be picking an alternative from Hobbymill.  Have to check the new plans first.  As for manufacturer, I like MS especially the newer kits with the improved instructions and first class plans.  This is why I like Chuck's work and would also do fine with Sam's --- he is also upgrading some of their older kits.

I'll never do POF.  Drive me nuts.

Most important, it had to be a ship I like.  I'm totally partial to US and British.

Also, although I would have liked another fully rigged lady, I don't have the room to display another good sized one ---- hence the choice of Confederacy as the admiralty version.

Augie,

What are your plans for a case for your model? Did you buy a case from ME? What size did you get?

I designed and built a case for my Flying Fish not too long ago and was thinking about building another for my Syren, but ME has a big sale going on ....

Rod-

Yes, it's an ME case.  I had originally gotten one based on the published dimensions but it was a bit too big for my taste.  So I ordered a GM7W which will give a tight, but adequate, fit.  The smaller case also allows me to use a better display space.

The larger case will be reduced in height and shall serve nicely for Confederacy down the road.

I hasten to post a reminder that it was Floyd's wish to get this log to 100!  I've been brain dead for 3 days (I know, hard to tell).

Sjors-  Case is oak and will use glass all around.  I'm old school - plastic hasn't been invented yet.

It wasn't blank, it was a zen post.

If you stare at it long enough you can feel his admiration for the model and the attempts at reaching 100.  The eternal struggle between man and post is vivid.   His attempts to reach our inner modeler through his minimalist approach is commendable.

Something oddly fascinating about this comment.  Not the meaning but rather the mind that generated the thought.  I'm beginning to wonder what you folks do (did) in 'real life'.

Oh wait ------ MSW is our real life :)

Sjors----  Yes, the glass will make it somewhat heavy, but not exceedingly so.  It's only approx. 1/8"  (3mm) thick and the oak frame is strong.  Someone on here used glass twice that thickness --- now THAT would be heavy.  I need to see what type of glass we have available locally out here.  I've used a special non-reflective glass on some large photos I have hanging but that may not be available.  At any rate, no glass cutting until we have the case ---- and the wait continues.

I think you were speachless Kevin........I get that way sometimes when I see something this awesome!  :)    you'd be cheating yourself Augie,  if you didn't build another ship ;)

about the case.........I have heard horror stories about the use of glass.......lots of folks use the plexi glass.   I forget what they call that certain type,  but there is some out there that resists scratches.  is this something you've thought about?

It is not the glass that gets you...it is the broken glass that does (although I don't actually know of anyone  to whom that has happened). I suppose it could turn a fine ship into a battle weary one.

Here in Charleston we sit on a fault line. I am planning to use plexi.

Augie I don't think those Rockies move. I'll bet glass works out fine.
