  1. Well, darn, my wife and I and our son, who lives in SF, were at the Asian Art Museum the week of September 13-20 so we just missed your display. We went to to see the amazing interactive teamLab, Continuity display. What a mind blowing experience of interactive, digital art!
  2. Thanks for your review, Joseph. Be sure to make a build log when you begin to build this model so we can follow along.
  3. Lovely work, Glenn, and an outstanding build log as always! You're setting the bar very high for me if I ever get around to actually building the Flirt rather than being a vicarious, armchair builder!
  4. I just received a Kell honing guide ordered directly from Richard Kell. I haven't used it yet but it is a beautifully made tool and he is a wonderful man to do business with. He was very helpful and prompt in answering my questions. I think you have posted this before elsewhere but, since we are on the subject in this thread, can you explain your sharpening process using the various grits of sandpaper again for us, Derek? Thanks!
  5. I just saw your models in the gallery and they are stunning. Fantastic work, Mark! I see that you have made models of the Fitzgerald and the old and new Coast Guard Cutters Mackinaw. I would love to see you make a build log of your next model so we could see the materials and interesting techniques you use to make these wonderful models. I served aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Storis WAGB-38 based out of Kodiak, Alaska, way back in 1966-67. Like the old Mackinaw, the Storis was also built at the Toledo Shipyards a couple of years earlier in 1941. We were able to do light to medium ice-breaking but didn't go into the heavy pack ice in the arctic. Thanks for sharing your work!
  6. Thanks so much, BE! I'll definitely be adding silver soldering to my repertoire now!
  7. Just make sure you have plenty of new, sharp #11 blades for it. That's the most useful blade for ship modeling.
  8. Well, your model looks pretty darn good to me. I hope it finds a good home. I'm 75 and I've come to the conclusion that that time defies the laws of physics and does indeed go faster the older we getting. Hell, it's flying now!
  9. Please let us know the results of your test, David. I too have been happy with Vallejo paints both their model paints and their model air paints. The model air paints can be brushed just fine also.
  10. Nice work on the vent, Bug! I have no experience with soldering. I'm in the market for a soldering station as I would like to learn to do silver soldering as well. What is the soldering unit you are using? Have you been completely happy with it?
  11. Great choice to build the Lady Eleanor. BE's build log with be a great help too. He makes some of the best build logs here on MSW. Be sure and start a build log of your own when you begin to build her. Good luck, Steve!
  12. Looks beautiful, David! Did you coat the hull with anything after you finished the planking? It looks great.
  13. This looks like an interesting, little project, Grant. I'm sure you'll make it into a small jewel. With your eclectic tastes in modeling, it's always fun to see what you have chosen to build next. I'll be following along. Good luck!
  14. She looks beautiful even in disarray, Glenn! Nice to see that you got a week of photography in during your time in the Smokies. My photography gear has been gathering dust since the beginning of the pandemic. I think I'll finally get started on my Flirt week. We've been in San Francisco visiting our son and then babysitting his dog for a week while he was off to Albuquerque. Tons of yard and garden work also after we had the biggest bomb cyclone since the early 1900's that poured records amount of rain on northern California in just a couple of days.
  15. That looks very sharp, Mike!
  16. As Chris and Rob have stated, you can't go wrong with a Vanguard model. The Fifie or the Zulu would be perfect. You will not find better step-by-step instructions.
  17. Great explanation, Ron! I'm so glad you decided to share your modeling knowledge with us on this build.
  18. Holding the plank on its edge while planing it seems like it would be wobbly and difficult to control but it sounds like you've got it mastered. Really nice work, David!
  19. This is a gorgeous ship with beautiful lines. I've seen it built a couple of times here on MSW. Good luck on your first build, Chris!
