I'm really enjoying your build of the Zulu, BE. I have this one on the shelf and I'm sure I'll be referring to your build when I build mine.

Simply stunning craftsmanship on this beautiful boat, Gary! I need to go back now and study your build log. The level of detail you have achieved is amazing.

...but you can get an unexpected basement in Florida if your house is sitting over a future sinkhole!

It's wonderful to see you developing yet another amazing looking model ship kit. Can you tell us what other model ships you are thinking about creating in the future? I would love to see a model of a chebec in your ship models.

First of all, welcome to MSW from a fellow Californian (Sacramento). You made a lot of progress in a short amount of time. I'll pull up a chair and follow your build of this beautiful ship. Is this model still in production from Model Shipways? It looks like it comes in one of their modern blue boxes but I've never seen it on their website. Good luck!

I didn't do a build log on my first two small models either. Then I began building the Medway Longboat and got to a point where I needed help. I got a lot of encouragement to go ahead and make a build log even though I had already finished the hull. It turned out to be the best thing I could do. Not only did I get a lot of good advice but I also got a lot of nice comments and encouragement. That motivated me to keep going especially when it got to the rigging. I had never done any rigging before. Doing the build log helped me finish the model and do a nice job on it. I wouldn't have done as well as I did without the advice and encouragement I received from other modelers. The Flirt may be my next build once I complete the Pen Duick. I'm looking forward to following along as you build this wonderful model. Good luck!

I just came across this topic. This model looks to be pretty high quality and I think it will be popular.

She looks outstanding, Derek! Good to here that you are pleased with the small PE parts. I've never worked with any PE before and, like you, I have had reservations about how authentic they would look. For example, the hooks have flat edges instead of being rounded but it seems like, once they are painted, you are happy with them. The jury is still out for me until I actually work with some PE but it's encouraging to hear that you are satisfied so far.

Good luck, Mike! I've never soldered anything in my life and I may need to do some on my Pen Duick build so I'll be viewing youTube as well.

Hello Ron, that's a beautiful model you built! I found the photos on this website which has full views and detailed views: https://www.modelships.de/Schebecke-Le-Requin/Le-Requin_eng.htm Amati and Occre both still have models of this type of ship. I think they are incredibly beautiful and my previous post has certainly generated quite a it of interest. I think it would be a very popular model for either Chris or Chuck if one of them decided to create a new chebec kit.

I prefer the brown color, VTHokiEE. That's an excellent illustration of the seizing. What book or source is that from?

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
