Alright then! Now that Mark has finally arrived with the popcorn and drinks, I'll take a seat and follow this one too. Looks to be an interesting build Vivian. I like your ideas for improving her. I did wonder if the new windows were a little too large, but hey, you're the Captain, it's your choice!

Alex, I remember following your beautiful build before the "great MSW crash", but it has taken me a year to find her again. What a beauty she is too! I just love the way you explain your methods - so many wonderful ideas, tips and tricks. I'm in for the long haul now - can't wait to see further updates.

I have only the flimsiest grasp of how the metric vs "non=metric" notation systems work for taps and dies. I get that the notation measures slightly different things, but.......... A search of the internet brings up all sorts of interesting information, but none that I've been able to find so far seem to give a very basic "equivalence" if you wish. For example, say you wish to find out what the closest metric size might be for a given "non-metric" size (e.g. 4-40, or 2-56 etc). Does anyone know of such a simple comparison chart? It sounds too easy, but clearly it isn't.........

Household blackening fluids.
gjdale replied to Senior ole salt's topic in Metal Work, Soldering and Metal Fittings
If it really is copper you are wanting to blacken, then use Liver of Sulfur (LOS). Not exactly a household product but easily obtainable online. http://www.polymerclay.com.au/xlgel1liverofsulphurextendedlifegel1oz-p-13276.html LOS has the advantage of being able to be used 'in situ' on the model without affecting the surrounding wood - just wash off the timber. EdT uses this almost exclusively on his Naiad model.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
