  1. Thank you, Chuck and Frank, for the nice comments. And also thank you to everyone who clicked "Like". I'm glad my error won't hurt me. This continues to be an unrivaled model building experience for me. This hobby is even more fun shared with all of you.
  2. It has been a while since I posted an update. There’s not much to see, but I’ve missed posting. I’ve completed the spirketting and am starting to work on margin planks. These are a ways from complete and are still pretty uneven. The cannon is also far from complete. I built it just enough to confirm that my gun ports are OK. I totally cheated on the quoin by using a store bought belaying pin. I will try to make them from scratch when I get to chapter six. I’m happy with the three gratings in this shot, but the other three are a train wreck right now. I bought another grating kit to replace them. You can see that I cracked the port side beam clamp at the forward notch. I think this will be hidden in the end. The port margin plank in this shot is pretty close. I not cutting the scarf joint until the next piece is ready.
  3. I don’t know much about making rope, but that looks terrific to me. I agree that the cotton looks better than the polyester.
  4. Hi Frank. I'm getting close to making an update. Spirketting has been a slow process for me with not much good to show in the middle of the process.
  5. Nicely done, Steven. They look great! Also, thanks for your description of the process to make them.
  6. Congratulations on finishing your Syren model. You did a wonderful job on her. I’m looking forward to watching your USF Confederacy come together.
  7. Neat site, Paul. It sent me down an hour long rabbit hole into airplanes!
  8. Hi Ken. I think you will find a lot of helpful hints for planking on this site. I’m sure I never would have finished planking mine without the example, instructions, and support from MSW. Do you have any pictures to share?
  9. Well done, Bob! You’re a master at cannon rigging, for sure! Hospital time? That’s no good. I hope everything is ok now.
  10. She looks great, Chris! Thanks for sharing. I've checked out CLC's website in the past and they look like nice kits. It was a pleasure to watch yours come together. I'm looking forward to photos on the water.
  11. Your deck planking is looking great, JJ. I like the red paint on the deck framing, too. I don't think I've seen that on the others, but it looks sharp. Are your coamings still loose, allowing you to remove them for sanding? Or are you working with them glued in place?
  12. That looks great, Will! Six weeks away from your model? That sounds terrible. Lastly, I'm very sorry about your friend who recently passed. Your positive tribute is uplifting.
  13. I agree wholeheartedly, Ron. When this group started, I knew it was above my ability and experience. But I really wanted to be a part of this group. It has been so much fun to build and share the experience here.
  14. Hi Ron. Yes, they taper in at 27 and then flair out at the counter. It’s even more dramatic at the stern post. I think you can see that in pictures in some of the build logs. Mine is surely not the best example, but here’s a quick shot of mine so you can see what we’re talking about.
  15. Your rings and eyes look perfect. On the eyes, I assume you wrap them around something several times and then cut to separate them. What do you use to cut them?
  16. You’ve done a brilliant job, Dan! Your modifications make this really something special. It looks like a contest winner to me for sure! Thanks for sharing all the details of your build.
  17. There are some views of the moldings on the full size sheet "Winchelsea 4". This was my first time trying to scrape moldings - let alone create custom scrapers. So I just did the best I could to make something decent. But they're not very close to what's on the drawing. Read a lot of the logs because some in our group got terrific results and posted good pictures.
  18. I agree with Justin. This is more of a minor screw-up that you can easily recover from. But you are right that the sills and lintels will help strengthen them going forward. Some people have also used binder clips to reinforce them while you are fairing. They can make the hypotenuse of a triangle between the flat top of the bulkhead and the upright.
  19. That looks outstanding, Fred! I like that you used blue on the stem like the contemporary. I've been thinking about doing that also. It looks really nice.
  20. That looks great, JJ! What did you use on your “bricks” for the stove base? It came out really nice. Was it some type of weathering powder?
  21. This looks fantastic, Chuck! I don’t know how you get so much work done when you have your hands in your pockets every time I see you!
