Warped frames
cog replied to jdbondy's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
She may be right, but it looks like there won't be much of a health hazzard ... -
I love these subs, and often considered buying the one from Krick as it is the "sailing" one, but lacks a lot of detail. Your build, has got me thinking again. Especially with the added PE it will most certainly make a beautiful build. I was wondering with regards to the lighting: Wouldn't the cables run on the inside of the hull, especially during that period of shipbuilding. You could make it less hard on yourself with regards to not making them invisble if you let them run on the inside instead of on the outside ...

Questions, questions, questions ... decals ... white text. You make outlined text, the outline should have the same colour as the background you put the decal on, the surrounding area of the decal to. Not that hard I woul say, just to come up with, I needed it a while ago, hence the quick response I'll look into the mast. You'll need riging from the yard down (flags and such) wire to the readio room etc. Look at the plastic builds!

Fair job, mate. Why did you use the plastic for the superstructures anywas. It looks like one big lump of brass ... does it come in "all brass" too???

As time evolved, the wood quality of the models decreased (not only for wooden ships). Lasercutting only made things look easier. You should realise you didn't start a jigsaw which you've found out by now, but besides the manual in the box, you've got a "walking" knowledge base at your feet here at msw. Use it to your advantage, and your build will be a lot of fun

I am still looking for the minor defects. Marvelous detail as we have come to expect of you

Glad you got that wrapped around. Next time build a larger scale, it will be easier by far on the soldering. You might want to get a larger dining table too in that case. Your railing looks actually rather good, just enjoy the view

Just take care not to heat it to much ... it will burn away, so no torch. Keep in mind it will deform more easily too

But that wouldn't be fair, it wouldn't be a tube as depicted in the "brochure". Besides, RGL wouldn't stand for it!

Thanks for your warm welcome mate Roll the PE around a metal rod ... that's the easy (not very creative) part. Getting it glued, without the rod inside, and keeping it round ... now that is a different muddle. You do, however, get the hang of it when I look at the picture. i am more curious as to how you will make the open end for the tube, that is a lot harder

That should be enough if you are a fervent Ikea modeller ... They just would have to cope now, wouldn't they ... When I look at Musashi (old tool) with FlyHawk and Pontos PE sets, that would be about the same, instruction-wise that is. You just start at the beginning and muddle through. A bit like every model you've made ...

Iwould sooner try my hand on tissue,or rice paper as those are thinner. Tissue ... you can even peel layers ... just ideas at the top of me hat

Then the question arises, will she be displayed in a museum or at a navy board ... I presume neither, so you can do what you want

Love the way the rigging is progressing. Not so certain about the flag. Looks a bit ... crumpled. Will you show her with or without sails? If with sails, furled or unfurled? (I know, it's easy to comment from the sideline)

Not surprisingly with earthen-ware druxey. Sorry Pieter couldn't resist it either.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
