Blackening brass
mtaylor replied to Bill Hill's topic in Painting, finishing and weathering products and techniques
VTHokiEE, I have what may be a dumb question... between "baths" are letting the brass dry? I wipe dry using a paper towel or two after taking my brass out of any solution except the blackening. Even after wiping, I set it aside on dry paper towel and let it finish drying. I only ask because the first time I blackened, I went from acetone, to vinegar, to water, to blackening and didn't dry. I wasn't a pretty sight. -
Welcome to MSW, German. A build log is a great idea as we all learn from each other.

Welcome to MSW, Smittybear. Looking forward to your logs.

With the lifting "rings" on hatch covers, not all were done the same way. On my current build, some covers have two per board (one a each end), some have them only on every other board, and a few have them only on the "outside" boards which would two of those boards per hatch. But I tend to believe that every country and even every shipyard had their own ideas.

Welcome to MSW, Andrew.

Thanks for the comments and the likes. I'm plugging away at the stern still. I took a look at what needs to be done to the bow and that's simple. This back end is bit of a problem as instead of looking ahead maybe 10 steps, I need to think backwards from the final look to "how do I get there". I hope to have it resolved in a week and then start making sawdust and hull planks.

Proof of life. Still slugging away at this. I have installed all the port sills and everything has had a good sanding. More will be done just before planking starts. I'm still working on the stern which is giving me pause. Too many complex curves involved but I think I have it sorted. Maybe one more time to get it right then planking. I'm holding off sanding the interior at this point as the Lite-Ply is very fragile and one slip and a minor disaster for repair. Live and learn. Here's pics of the state of work.

Welcome to MSW. If you haven't found it yet, we do have a log on this model. It might help to review it (it's a finished log) it and see what's involved.

Welcome to MSW. I just checked and there is a log on-going for Polaris. He's not very far into though as he just started it.

Welcome to MSW, Alexander. I'm looking forward to seeing your build logs.

Welcome back home, Dave. There's beverages in the cooler.

Don't put your log here in this topic/area. Put in the build log area, please.

I was thinking the same thing as G.L. But also thought "he'd never actually put the model in a lake".... Yes, she looks that good.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
