Joe, Your last sentence is what this hobby is all about. And don't feel bad about all the comments. Ask the same question about any manufacturer and you'll see a lot of complaints.

Popeye, Whichever one you switch over to... we'll be there. Lots of chairs at lots of tables. :D

NIgel, Keep on challenging things.... If you're going to have lights in it, you best be thinking about that before planking or going much further as the wiring needs to be run. I ran into issues with my Constellation even though I'd started the wiring with backbone and bulkheads. If I were doing it again, I'd do it much differently. Brian, Nigel, Dan's was wood. I'm not sure if it was a Hasegawa.

Artesiana Latina HMS Victory 1:84 scale kit (REVIEW)
mtaylor replied to mtdoramike's topic in Wood ship model kits
Mike, I hope you'll do a build log and let us follow along. Interesting kit. I'm surprised at the "no second planking"... that's one of AL's hallmarks. -
Wow.. I did not realize how large that ship was until I saw the turret in your hand. Beautiful work going on there.

Go for it, Nenad and don't worry about the boring phase. You got what you were looking for and that is sometimes half the battle. Have fun with the coppering.- 4,152 replies

Chris, I guess I should have followed up a bit... I now have the plans I needed to sort this out. Boats are on gundeck, on chocks as Gaetan's plans showed. It was fairly common to do it the way you mentioned but also the way this one is. I think it was up to the shipyard, designer, shipwrights, and possibly even the Captain on how these were stored.

Nenad, To answer one of your unanswered questions... the coppering should follow the water line and the plank runs can go below the waterline as well as above it.- 4,152 replies

Anyone have this rigging line? AL8806
mtaylor replied to Jetwrench's topic in Masting, rigging and sails
John, I'm glad I had the right stuff on hand. Have fun with it. I found out a long time ago that MSW is best tool in my toolbox. I hope it becomes the best tool in yours. -
Sweet work on the crane and armaments, Piet. I wish I could hit "like" more than once.

Nice work, Mobbsie. Congrats in advance on all the celebrating. I won't even begin to try to sort out Sjors's age which apparently is somewhere between 18 and 81..???

THE BLACKEN-IT TRIALS
mtaylor replied to Erebus and Terror's topic in Metal Work, Soldering and Metal Fittings
E&T, I've been using about 1/2 hour. For a bit there, I was cleaning with acetone after buffing with the Scotch-Brite... but cleaning with acetone after the vinegar seems to work better for me. I'm not sure why.... -
THE BLACKEN-IT TRIALS

I've done the same method as E&T except I Scotch-Brited the brass first (if it wasn't milled or turned by me) and then instead of muriatic acid I used vinegar. It saves some aggravation as the acid to me is a hazard.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
