Actually, you're not taking up anyone's time... Research is a big part of scratchbuilding and kit bashing, so why not include it? It will certainly help anyone who follows and also, gives the rest of us some insight and possibly answers to our own questions.

Amanda by Tblack - FINISHED - RESTORATION

Hmm... she looks to be a clipper to my eyes. Might have a look at Cutty and Harvey builds for ideas on the missing bits and pieces. As for weathering... check the painting section and also, have a look at Sailcat's Cutty Restoration, Dafi's Victory, and Frank's Supply in the Kit Builds. Might give you some ideas. I know there's other builds doing serious weathering but I'm not finding them at this moment.- 40 replies

Joe, I remember that also about Hahn. But in this case, the chain wale (upper red arrow) runs the length of the hull. I can't imagine it having that profile the entire length. Nor can I imagine a transition point near the mid-section. The blue arrow points to the mid-section area which is where the profiled part is from the plan in the previous post. The transition areas would be right at the rear-most forward deadeyes and around the area of the main mast. Maybe there is a change in profile there...??? I have to admit, this isn't the most detailed set of Hahn plans that I've seen. Probably the least detailed. I'm thinking it's probably squared and he drew a profile in. I don't have that particular NMM plan (6213/39) to verify. I have the others but the cross section isn't on them. Nor is there a head-on drawing as Hahn did on his other plan sets which would let me see the profiles.

So much impressiveness in such a tiny ship, Daniel. Holes in the chainplates??? Are you going to make miniature deadeyes??? -
John, Have a cold one of your choice. Splice the main brace and all that. That is one sweet coppering job. And you say you've done it before???

Running away is not permitted until a) the ratlines are done, and we see pictures!!!!! The rigging spiders need guidance and if you run away, no one can predict what they'll do.

NIce work Matti. Don't try to get too precise in the cutting of the towers using the plans. As I recall, I cut close on the angles and dimensions and then had to spend much time fitting them exactly into place. Any tolerance build up in the hull, planking, etc. will throw off what the plans says for dimensions.

Nice fix on the gunport. Can we blame some evil shipbuilding fairy for filling in the gunport when you weren't looking?

NIce etchings, Clare. It's probably a good idea to revisit your process with the eyes of a newbie. I think most of us, after having an early success either miss a step or aren't as careful as when we were first trying a process out. I hope it works out and you can get some repeat success.

I've hit a bit of a dilemma on my Licorne build.... chain wales, sheer strake, and gunport linings. The plans show the chain wale and by inference, the sheer strake as being contoured (red arrows). The photos of Hahn's build show them as being more of a square cross-section. Also, the pictures of the build show the gunports as being unlined (blue arrow). I've looked at other French ship models and I'm seeing a mixed bag here. No consistency. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks for the warm words. It's good to be able to spend some quality time in the shipyard. I've hit a bit of a dilemma.... chain wales, sheer strake, and gunport linings. Door hinges

Sam Some folks use black paper, others foil. I'm not sure where you'd get black foil, though. Worst case, heat the brass to red and then then hammer it thinner. -

Boy... am I ever slow. Life, work, and getting things set up to retire have all taken their toll. One of the first things I had to do was make a new zero tolerance insert for the table saw. The old plastic one finally gave up the ghost. So... after some fiddling with metal and plastic, I grabbed some scrap wood and had at it. Then it was back to cutting planks and planking. I have only one side and small part of that done. From the wale line up to the channel wale on the port side. Needs to have the channel wale added and then sand like crazy and finish opening and tidying up the gunports.

Hamilton, I agree with Augie...not a mongrel. One has to remember that the Continental kits get some strange things done to them by the designers. I'll bet they counted openings and assumed that they were all gunports. After all, who wants to build an 18 gun ship when they can build a 20 gun?

"Salvage" and not "rebuild"... sounds bad Augie. My condolences. After crashing every control line bird I ever built, I gave up. Didn't want to think about RC and receivers, solenoids, etc. hitting the ground.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
