Hi Lextin Nice progress on the masts and rigging. I must admit that I didn't realise just how raked the masts were until I saw the photos above. I guess it's characteristic of these types of boats. Cheers Patrick

Nice job Dave! I certainly don't envy having the workload ahead of you, but it'll be worth it once done.

Hi Mike and Frank Many thanks for your comments and Likes. Mike-a floating palace sounds great. Now, if only I could afford a real one...! Frank-great to hear that your procedure went well, yesterday. I'm looking forward to your next Paragon update! All the best Patrick

Hi everyone and many thanks for your comments and Likes! Greatly appreciated! Well, over the past few nights, I've been working on Symphony's sails and rigging. Here's what it looks like so far. Lots of work still to go, though. For example, you may note that the mainsail needs some adjustments, as it's not quite fitting right. Hope you enjoy the photos so far. Cheers and all the best! Patrick

Hi Mike Are you sure that's not the full sized boat that you're pretending is your model? It must be, because it looks authentic, especially the way you've replicated the fillets against each deck beam to give strength and rigidity to the hull. One heck of a nice job! Cheers Patrick

Hi Mike The idea of the self draining cockpit is a good idea, and it would be interesting to see if the movement of the model underway is sufficient to create the hydraulic vacuum necessary to drain the water. As an aside, (and this may be totally irrelevant), many years ago, my Dad built an RC cabin cruiser, complete with a flushing toilet in the main cabin! Yep, that's right, it had a flushing toilet, which was fed by water being fed though an inlet below the waterline. The force of the water moving past the hull fed the toilet cistern. When the ball float in the cistern was raised sufficiently, the water flushed/drained away through another outlet above the waterline. Perhaps this was an example of the 'hydraulic vacuum' operating in reverse to what you're proposing. But, as I said, it'd be great to see if your idea works. All the best! Patrick

Hi Gregor That's a real juggling act that you've got on there with all the different hulls going at the same time. Great job on all of them. I'm looking forward to following along. Cheers Patrick

Hi Vaddoc The setbacks can be a real "pain the you know what", but the good thing is that you're well and truly over them. I'm loving what you've done so far, especially your workmanship and attention to detail. Also, I can't leave without saying that those blocks look brilliant. Nicely done! Cheers Patrick

Hey Denis Thanks for the Father's Day best wishes. Mine went really nicely. As for your rudder...gotta say how nice the gudgeons and pintles look. Nice and authentic, that's for sure. I must admit though, I don't quite understand why'd the rudder was skewed to one side. What is it compensating for? Nice job on the gammoning in the bowsprit area. All the best! Patrick

Hi BNoah Druxey took the words right outta my mouth. I was trying to think of what options you may have, but perhaps an occupational therapist may be able to advise you? Good luck and all the best! Cheers Patrick

Hi Jon I've loved following your every post, from start to finish, of your Charles. She looks absolutely fantastic in and out of the water. You've gotta be really chuffed! Over the next few months, I hope that you can sort out the sailing problems so that she tack into the wind, thereby allowing her to come back to the shore. Gotta say, though, I'm really looking forward to your new boats taking shape, as well! Cheers and all the best Patrick

Hi BNoah She's looking great and you must be very chuffed! One question, though-just curious as to why you mentioned that 'this will be your last build ever?' Cheers Patrick

Hi Ron This was my first visit to more build log, only to hear of the sad news of your daughter's house and her cats and dogs. My thoughts are with you, your daughter and family. I hope she was insured and that she is able to rebuild and recover quickly. Take care Patrick

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
