The 1943 configuration requires 34 x 20mm single AA guns. Pontos gives you enough plus spares for the ‘41 configuration (21 guns), so the extra Infini set of guns is required to make up the balance.

You can see the kit product and why one destroys one’e Eyes to replace it.

Ill hopefully have them done tommorow

Great work greg - do you glue the pe boxes or just leave them built?    I bottled out in using the whole 20mm pe sets,  I just used the pe shileds but filed the plastic gun barrels a bit.

Those cranes look great Greg; even if you don't think they are that good.  Great to see you didn't let them beat you - must be colleagues of IKEA instruction authors ;)  :)

cheers

Pat

Before you glued the Oerlikon gun pedestals to the gun mounts, did you file off flat the little brass pin, or did you glue the gun mounts to the pins?

I found that the pin didn't fit the hole in the mount, the pin being too large in diameter. The mounts were too fragile for me to re drill the holes a little larger to fit the pins. So opted to file the pin off flat against the top of the pedestal.

It doesn't take much to have parts of those assemblies to fly off into the nether regions even after they've been glued together. God forbid a cat or something of that sort brush up against them after they're built.

I got the airbrush out. After the rattle can primer, a  good coat or Black/Brown and then a couple of satin coats.

You can see the hull plates where they have been etched in. I then gave the lower hull 2 coats of chipping fluid, then a few shades of red to bring out the panels.

I then removed most of that work with the chipping fluid using an old toothbrush.

So tomorrow I can start to grunge her. As it was in 1943 before her last war refit, she was in the Mediterranean so I reckon she'd be pretty grubby below the water line.

The band that been rubbed back to bare metal will be covered in grunge and the boot strap and upper hull colours will make this pretty un noticable anyways.

Greg, this chipping fluid you used intrigues me. How do you apply it? Is it random or applied across the whole surface? Do you leave any on the hull after you brush it?

So chipping fluid is like using salt back in the day?

I guess so, Mark. I've seen airplane models done up with salt. Didn't realize you wash off the areas with water, thought it was done dry.

Grunge time/ I used a large brush and dabbed on Mr Surfacer underneath to give it some barnacle coarseness. 1.thumb.JPG.7efd6ca4d00680e3cecac1437456bd15.JPG

Then a light grey overspary to dull the edges,

2.thumb.JPG.d6c5c867cc54f68811c8072f2248e06e.JPG

then a diluted black, then diluted green

3.thumb.JPG.aead40d3bc7575b9c83111942a4e9085.JPG

then another coat of black. I'm quite happy with it.

Next is the upper hull and boot straps. Once I've done that I can add the depth markers and do a salt/slime ring at the watermark and upper hull weathering.
