Next deck details....... Two last hatches, flagpole planks and sail boom pad.

I have also started with fastening of the blocks in the eyes where hook is not used. It would be really tricky to do this on the ship so I decided to remove the eye, Fast the Block outside and put it back. Will do this for all eyes which holds block this way.

Instalation of the rudder braces to the hull. It took me while to figure out how to position it properly. At the end I clamped the plank to the keel which protrude to the stern and fix the rudder to the position. Once I was happy with the position of the brace I marked the position with the tape. Remove the rudder and glue the brace. IMG_20190902_081414.thumb.jpg.7c769e14fd5ac70f21cb36f596219e1e.jpgIMG_20190902_141117.thumb.jpg.c000c4bca472b733eaf710766f81dc6a.jpgIMG_20190902_141133.thumb.jpg.8d7e4a6f9de430338fcfd6728bb45a10.jpg

I have shaped the rudder tiller and did the tiller tackles. The end of the rope will end on the rudder tiller as well, this is just temporary fastening on the cleat as I'm not sure about the colour of the tackle. This thread is supplied with the kit. The quality is fine but I'm not a fan of that white and glossy colour. I'm thinking of replacing it by my own thread with matt tan colour.

Thanks man, I agree. I did some comparison here (unfortunately the picture does not show the real colour) the thread is little thinner but I still think it looks better. IMG_20190903_155634.thumb.jpg.195810b4db9f1b0bf424cdd74d8815cc.jpgIMG_20190903_155541.thumb.jpg.681eba6316fad58ebcaf4279da87e123.jpg

Both tackles replaced

Good day ,

Peta,

Very good, accurate, precise  and " sharp" work You did!

Watch it with pleasure...but the "ropes" , you used ... :(...they somehow drops out from the entire style of the model...

Agree with Dubz, could it be replaced for (?self made ropes as option?), with more realistic looks?

there are a few very simple rope making mashines on the market I saw, but the ropes which You made by yourself will looks much, much better, than just ordinary ,unprocessed threads You used now...

Hi Kirill4,

thank you very much for your comment. I got your point, I'm still trying to figure out the rigging (material). I got my rope walk, serving machine etc.. (you can check my Royal Caroline if you want....

in AVOS case, there are more things to consider

  1. the picture really does not show how does it look like in the reality (it looks much better). And as I said the quality of the rope supplied with the kit is really high, I just do not like the colour.
  2. my biggest issue is the scale. This rope has diameter 0.3 (in the kit). the thread I use is little bit thinner but if I make rope 1x3 from it it becomes to thick. If it is black rope I do not have problem, I have thinner threads so I can make thinner ropes. Unfortunately I haven't found source in my country where they sell thinner thread in the colour I would like to use (they sell only black or white). Anyway I have found some abroad so I'm going to order and create the "real rope". I doubt this is the final solution.

for all my followers,

could you  please advice what is the good way to make a coil from rope? I found some tutorials but it is not what I would like to use. Thanks a lot!

This is my biggest trouble with supplied ropes. Each diameter has different colour. The 0,2 and 0.3 have greenish tone. I would be happy with 0,4 but 0,5 is too White to my taste. I do not want the ship looks like X-mas tree after all the hours I have spent on it.

As I said I still have to find some good material to work with!

Are you referring to coils looped over belaying pins or coils on the deck ( or both )..  I don't have access to my photos right now, and I'm sure others will join in..

My method is to get  the rope saturated with a very thin white glue mixture, and create a coil/bundle resembling photos I have found.  I have a jig I use that I will show you later.

Once the glue dries, there is still some flexibility, it behaves sort of like wire; and I proceed to set it up on the boat, keeping it in place with more white glue that isn't visible.

Hi Gregory,

now I'm most curious about coils hanging from belaying pins or cleats but I guess both will be used on the model (once rigging guns for example). I would appreciate your pictures once you have some time to spent ;)

thanks a lot.

Here is the little jig I use to make coils.  I move the nails and pins around to get the look I want.  Also, a picture I use for inspiration.

Thanks a lot @Gregory, will try that!

Did I say that binnacle house was small? Here is the first gun assembled. The square on the pad is 1cm. Even it is very small it is very very detailed. My plan was to fully rig it with tackles (not included in the kit). Not sure if it will be possible but will try what I can do!

I have received those testing blocks with hooks Just for this purpose. I think it could work. Blocks are only 2mm. Will see.

When I built Sherbourne many years ago, I replaced all the kit blocks with aftermarket blocks. At 1/64 scale, the gun tackle blocks were 2 mm. They were very fiddly to work with. At 1/72 scale the problem will of course be magnified.

Hi @ccoyle

Could you do me a favour and drop the link to your Sherbourne built (if available) I'm finding inspiration for the tackles

Thanks a lot!

Good day,

Dear Peta_V,

Ah,...now I see, that ropes which You used , it was supplied together with kit...?

in such case, looks like/could I guess/ there are sizes of the ropes correct only...according to the model rigging plan,

but I think( looking at the foto with supplied ropes) they coudn' t be used on the model straight from the box (on the foto,  lay of the ropes looks too loose, and  color too shining)I think , this supplied ropes need to be "processed" a little before use.

#

probably need to be rewinding,to get more tight lay...as example refer to the Gregory 's foto with ropes, which are looks right in appearance and color...may be it will be easy to make new ropes ,correct in size and lay from the begining? :)than try to correct supplied ropes? :)

recently I ve found good staff , I think it is very convinient to use it ::)for making ropes any size we need for the small scale model - this is Gutermann products...I bouth a few realy "big" coils of different size...it is serie "scala" threads N #  200;240;360,

which is kind of "mono" thread and could be winding in any direction when making your own ropes...I found them in this shop - https://legus39.ru/products.php?category_id=44

than combining already made ropes from this threds  and use different thread No ...we can make ropes of different sizes we need...

there are also treads serie "tera"...which is also good for making ropes, but they less interesting because they are already made as ordinary thread, and not so easy for making small ropes...

#

color... :)

personaly I prefer to use white...or bright thread colors and later ,when rope made, to stain or paint them in color I need...actualy we need only two color for rope painting...

I use acrylic paint, made mix of bright and dark colors for painting running and stay rigging...but better result could be obtained using artist oil paints deluted in thinner - reffer as example to the works of this high rank modeller Dmitry Shevelev...

how looks his artystic paints painted ropes

there is translated text from D.Sh. advices regarding ropes painting techniques

...Re: How is this done? Dmitry Shevelev »Mon Jan 16, 2017 13:24 Good afternoon, Oleg! I paint white threads with art oil paints. I’m breeding a half-liter jar. I mix a tube of paint with liquid oil. On a standing rigging is the Leningradskaya Umbra. On running to this paint I add ocher. I paint by pulling the thread through a jar or a poured puddle of paint. Then I pull the thread through the glove several times and hang it up to dry. You can use it in a day....

All the best

Kirill

@kirill4 Hi mate,

  1. yes those 4 coils on the photo are ropes supplied with the kit
  2. the one I tested on the tiller tackles was thread Gutermann 100%PES in colour 868. I have used several sizes and shades to make ropes on Royal Caroline and was very happy with the result.
  3. I have already found the source where to order. I have order Gutermann MARA 220 in shade 868 (I really like this colour for running rigging). I think this size should be thin enough to create nice thin rope from 3 threads. The delivery time is longer 2-3weeks as they do not have it in stock but that should be fine as there are plenty wood work on AVOS still to do.
  4. thanks for the links, these are some lovely looking ships
  5. This is example of my own ropes using Gutermann thread. 868 shade is used for deadeyes lanyard. It is little bit more brown in reality. IMG_20190906_094017.thumb.jpg.679ca5d9020c6369dd2a41360116a422.jpg

Good day,

Lanyards looks nice!

"Mara " serie, I didn't try...but on your foto it looks good, means it must be suitable material for ropes making, as well as gutermann " scala" and " tera"...

regarding trying to find suitable color No ... I don't know... I prefer to use white or very light color and than to use paint for making desired rigging color...as seems to me, if not paint...than some kind of stain need to be used and matt varnish...

but this of cause very personal feelings about right model appearance  :)))

#

Regarding rope coil making... I used almost same techniques as Gregory, and deluted white clue as well to keep desired coil form...for making process faster, I use hair dryer.

The only difference - I make rope coil in two parts, and than assemble them in one piece...You could see it on the last few pages in my thread abt galleon building- link in my sinature...

When placing prefabricated coils , I use small q-ty of CA gell, to make some additional" gravity" effect to the rope in coil...

Thank you all for the inspiration. I will use it once I have the material for rigging. Meanwhile I took a picture of the components of gun carriage (breeching rope with eyelets is still missing) this is what is in the kit. Once I decide on the tackles, I will have to add more eyelets.

Right channel with chain plates and deadeyes. Temporary mast with thread tied to the shrouds height to check the direction of the chain plates and also the inclination of the deadeyes.

As the hull is coming closer to finish I have to work on all very small remaining details. This time Just Iron work.

Traveller (it is so small that my poor camera couldn't catch any more details)

Some more eyelets for sanding rigging. With the thimble for bobstay and 2 on each side for bowsprit shrouds.

Continue with almost invisible details. I have added Iron pins to rudder hinges and simulate iron belts on boat davits using coper tape.

I decided to finaly glue the coamings to the deck. Some holes in the deck were slightly larger then the coming and There was visible space between deck and the coaming. I have used the pieces of the scrap deck wood to fill those holes.
