Nice job on the coppering! The extra glue can be removed by acetone (nail polish remover) or debonder.

Make sure that you wipe down and seal the hull after you clean up the glue (I used a basic clear coat).  Otherwise you take the risk of rapid oxidation and possibly getting fingerprints oxidized in the hull from the oils in your skin (I may or may not have learned this the hard way).

I am trying to decide whether or not to plank my Speedy myself or use the prefabricated laser engraved sheet. So i decided to spend the weekend deckplanking my Snake to have something to compare to. I am also using maple here since i want a "whiter" tone than the supplied Tanganyika.

This was quite alot of work...

Unfortunately my maple is really rough and each plank require alot of side sanding. My Proxxon has been invaluable to fix the tips of the planks.

Each plank is 15cm long and i am doing a 3cm pattern. I am using a pencil for the caulking since i thought that a Black pen made it to harsh. Hopefully i Will finish this i a few days. The laser engraved pattern feels very tempting for my Speedy now...

Really nice work though Vane!! I do think maple looks good as a deck.

Just a thought could you use the laser etched deck on Speedy and if not entirely satisfied plank on top with a thinner maple??

As I say just a thought 🤔

Working on the 18 carronades... these are not that great..  lots of adjustments needed to get them together. Next time I will probably order some aftermarket products from Vanguards instead.

Hi Vane,

If you have not already seen it and if you want to get rid of the shine on the copper plating, there is a recent thread here at MSW on how to do this easily and give a more realistic looking finish at no cost.

Ah yes. The brass gun barrels are pretty good (if your kit had those, not the white metal) but the other parts are pretty rudimentary and the assembled carriages will NOT sit on external porta.

Great to see you back working on her.

Great progress... rails, channels and pinrails attached. Most of the hull is in place now and moving on to the deck fittings.  The rails comes in one piece but I cut it in several sections to fit it better and used pins to get it in place.

One thought... its interesting to see how Chris designs has evolved over the years. HMS Snake was one of his first ships and I have it next to Speedy on the same shelf and it looks so  "bulky " in comparision.  I wonder how this kit would be if he designed it today 😛

Some years ago when I bought the kit I did some "pre work" brushpainted the carronades with thick acrylics... good idea at the time... but after buying an airbrush i realized the result was horrible. So I stripped the paint, scratchbuild an eye for the breech rope and airbrusched new laquer paint with much better result.

There are “hints” from Chris he might re-visit one of his earlier designs, the “Cruizer” class of Brigs/Sloops would be a good commercial option as they have many RN/USN incarnations he/we could chose from.

In order to make things easier i use photoetch burnishing fluid from Mig on small metal parts like eyelets and nails etc. I can always touch up with some black paint on spots where the metal shines through.
