I’ve just decided that sanding the outer hull is much more enjoyable than the inner. 

With that being said I’ve completed 80% of the port side with a rough sanding. The planks went down as Chuck prescribed, the only deviation I made aside from the month long lighting project was to glue the plank under the gunports down first to establish the correct run for the other three rows, the lowest 7/32 plank went in last which was a little bit harder to accomplish, the second layer will go down much easier. I Also got to poke around with the laser panels to see how much work I have ahead of me and it wasn’t too bad. Onto the stbd side this week hopefully.

That looks great, JJ!  I like your little sanding pads.  Those are a great idea and I'm definitely going to make myself a set of those to sand the decks.

Matt, I find that If there is sandpaper, glue and sticks laying around I make sanding tools on the fly, I end up having hundreds of these little things laying around. I guess it’s easier to make them rather than keep track of them. But it’s very easy to tailor them to nooks and crannies that conventional tools can’t reach.

I reckon what with your slight regression - I hope you found a fix - and your lighting deviation (which looks fantastic - I'm looking forward to seeing that when you've got the quarter deck and foc'sle in place - I'm catching you up. My inner planking and spirketting are nearly in. I'll get the paint pot out this weekend.

Thanks Fred, I've been getting little bits of time here and there to get work done. Sounds like you’re running wild on yours!

 

Last week I got cabin panels in along with the last double strakes, a single nice coat of red and it came out well. I had to do some minor wood filling to make some lines disappear before paint. The captains cabin panels went in pretty well with very minor adjustments.

 

Ive got the starboard spirketting almost complete, I spent some time tonight making sure my deck clamps were lined up as close as possible before I glued them on. I measured from multiple points as well as confirming with the eye test, using laser etched lines on the subdeck as a reference. This visual reference will be the final judge once the deck beams are in place. I’ll get them sanded tomorrow and start the panels before finishing the last few strakes.

Excellent build.  Some day I hope to have your level of skill.  Being nosey, are you building in an engine room of sorts?

Diver, to answer your question, yes I am building in an engine room.  Winchelsea will be my 4th boat built... on a boat and she comes in second For overall nautical miles under her keel!

 

I started Adding the panels to the stbd side tonight, making sure they are as close to the port as possible. A little trick I used to insure that the panels are square and lined up perfectly to the ports, I used a flat piece of wood that sits parallel to the gunport frame, glued it to the deck and wedged it in the frame, from there I can keep test fitting the panel until it fits perfectly between the two ports. When It comes time to glue it in place I can just put it up against the port with the wooden block and set the elevation and it will fit just as it’s supposed to without worrying about it moving side to side. I also used this on all the spirketting between the gunports as well. Hope Someone finds this is helpful.

Small update:

I got the checkered floor glued down tonight, I wanted to go with a black pattern but keep it a little more subtle so I kept the light squares just plain AYC with WOP. , I am almost

finished with the margin planks, a little bit of clean up some sanding and then off to the hatch coamings!

JJ, that floor looks awesome! I agree with keeping the light segments AYC whole heartedly. I'm curious how you did such a bang up job painting the black so cleanly. Your hints with the panels will be stored in this aging bean for later as well. Always a pleasure to watch your work

JJ, that looks just gorgeous! Did you mask off the AYC squares to paint the black ones?
What were those tiles in reality, were they wooden inlays like in my living room, or were they black and white stone tiles?
I know that stone was also used below hot coal ovens or heaters onboard so not to burn the wood or start a fire,

but I guess this was wood in realitity?

It was usually a canvas floor

cover like a rug.  But made from canvas like a heavy tarp.  That looks great.  I also want to know how you painted that so cleanly.

So the process for painting the black squares was very simple. All I did was, first I sealed up the checker floor with a generous amount of WOP and let it dry over night. The next day I began painting the darker squares in with black acrylic paint with little regard for staying in the lines as the acrylic won’t stick to the WOP very well. Once dry I lightly sanded the whole floor and since the lighter squares are higher up than the darker ones it cleaned up nice. You can see a small spot on the port side where I didn’t seal the wood well enough and some of the black bled through, so make sure your WOP gets everywhere before you paint! Then after you clean it up just WOP the whole thing again to seal up the bare wood as well as lock in the black paint.

That looks fantastic JJ and love the technique, very simple yet elegant results.  

 

I'm tempted (quite a bit down the road) to test out priming the raised parts with a few coats of acrylic white before applying WOP and the black paints.

Very clean and cleaver method making use of the height difference and the characteristics of the WOP versus acrylic paint. I’ll have to remember this when getting to this point, thanks JJ!

Back on the wagon again with my Winnie, it’s been too long. Got all the coamings completed along with gratings. Everything is in place and I’m almost ready to start lining off for planks. I’m not too happy with my stove base, its finish turned out ok but it warped really bad when I glued it down, I think I’m going to have to remove it and start over again. Somehow I messed up with the forward subdecks and had to deviate outside of the etched lines increasingly as I worked forward, I used a tight line to constantly check my centerline when glueing parts down, I ended up being about 1-1.5mm off at the forward most part of the bow.
