Messerschmitt bf 109G-6 by cog - Eduard - 1/48

Next build the Eduard Bf 109G-6 with the Eduard extra detailed cockpit I've built before

 

Initial stages, i.e. plucking the sprues empty and glueing it into a big blob,  I'll pass over. There the cockpit is the most labour intensive of the entire kit. And as OC would put it: These lits are a real pleasure to work with. Everything fits. So I'll be focussing on the painting and the other finishes. Abit of weathering ...? Who knows.

 

What's in the box ...

 

I have been searching the net for a nice colour scheme. There are so many for the German planes. Real challenges compared to most war birds, especially the modern ones. It will be either the all aluminum - second airplane in the first picture, or one of the others. Still undecided.

The all alu is not the hardest scheme, but I would like to know how the AK extreme metal paints behave. Weathering will be minimal as not much will be possible ... a bit of grime, rust and that's about all. The others well a different cookie, any favourites?

J-705  looks superb    German - Swiss   perhaps  (does that even make sense)?

 

Deffinatley  looking forward to this.

 

Just answered my own question  - Switzerland was neutral  during the Second World War.

Yeah they were, but they still flew Me-109's during it.... (and afterwards)

 

I would suggest it, it's not a scheme you see very often...

The Swiss pattern is certainly interesting in some ways. One style of camo on the forward fuselage another pattern on the upper wing and still a third on the tail with huge "Don't shoot at me I'm neutral" red and white in between. The Swiss air force didn't really fly at all between 1940 and 1943 and returned almost all interned German pilots and aircraft to Germany in those years. I think they did pretty much the same thing to the allies with pilots and crews through the Red Cross but kept the aircraft. Could be wrong, long time ago reading.

The big glued blob, as you can see I put on the canopy, it's partly glued on, the rear has been stuck on with blue tack and will be replaced with the definitve one after painting. This I found easier than masking.

Black primer to prepare the body for some depth. Instead of darkening the panel lines, I do it the other way around, which I found to be easier and give a more realistic effect

Instead of a light greyish colour I have used AK Extreme Metal Steel colour (didn't have Alu) which I sprayed in a random way, and partly accentuating pannels. It doesn't need to be accurate, as long as there is a difference between the black and the steel. It already looks quite nice ... no not ready. Added a clear coat on top of the metal paint, and now it's time for chipping fluid. After that waiting for some MRP (Mr Paint) paint I ordered for the Swiss version ... this will be fun. A lot easier than your Roden kit Denis?

yea....I like the swiss........I've never done one......but I'm partial to ken's choice.   something about that camo that gets me hot     I dunno.......I think your gonna have fun if your going swiss......the paint looks a bit complicated.   really nice work    I've got problems with the Dr 1........quick at putt'in the fires out though

Ken, Dennis, I was partial to the Northern African camouflage too, I might just use that one on the third build. Something colourful for a change would be nice, hence the red, white, grey, green and some sort of blueish/purplish, undefindish on the the tail. The last one will be pimped with a radio compartment, a detailup cockpit (as in this one), and an engine. This one and the previous one can't take off without an engine

 

It took me an hour to do the masking for the white, the red will be slightly easier ... we'll see. The Coolpix I used for the photographs leaves somewhat to be desired. Lighting is off, or it's the metal paint which makes the uncovered parts nearly uniform silvery

 

 

First there is paint work to do!

Painting result ... I didn't realise myself that once I coverd the plane in chipping fluid, it woould have certain consequences ... I have to remask it for the red and the other colours ... I will be ripping the masked colour layers off, at least partly ... ... already some of the white has been "damaged" when removing the masking tape. If it will be worse, Bf 109G-6 is in for a wash and polish ...

Reds and yellows are very translucent, so a light color underneath is a must. I have a modeling friend who has used a Badger yellow primer under the reds he paints freight cars. It's Stynylrez or you may find it in Europe under the AMMO by MiG label.

Edward, nice to see you tag along. You'll see it in Northern African paint scheme, just not this kit, but the next which is waiting. It merely needs some more fiddly work than this one. Started on the cockpit for the other, once finished, I need to build the engine ....... more tiny parts

As I feared ... pulled off some white, despite the fact that I put the masking tape onm my tjeans a few times, before masking ... at least I've got the red and the base coat on as well. Now a way to keep them on ...

 

Lost some of the preshading with the red and the base coat. I had to cover as predictedby Ken ... thanks mate ... shading and weathering in a unplanned way. Challenges, challenges  ... who doesn't like them ...

Probably a coat of clear lacquer ... solves most paint issues

That's interesting...Stynylrez and AMMO are the same paints in different bottles? I haven't tried Stynylrez paints/primers yet.
