Battle of Waterloo Attack on La Haye Sainte Farm 1/56 28mm

OC, the pond started out looking good. The color is very good.  Like others have said, let the resin do it's own thing as it sets.

Good day all,  I have decided to put the display case cover away  so I can work on the base - I  have placed  the building  plan on the base to check its positioning and room  - still lots more to do.

Evening all,   more work on the base courtyard area  - this needed a lot of fiddling to get the pieces to fit to gether  - some choping here  adding pieces there  and adjusting the pond area base.

Oh  I have also re worked the pond  by adding some bricks that had fell in after the KGL  hacked then out to make firing  holes, I then added another layer of gel  and let it set over night  (I did not touch it and still needs more time to fully set)

Thank you Alan,   It taught me a  lesson to not play with it after pooring in the gel  - the second layer was poored than put away in the cabinet to harden on its own - not with a hairdryer.

OC,

The model looks awesome!  Well done on the pond!

Sorry to hear about the wife’s fall.  Glad to hear she’s okay.

In the States we have something called Icy Hot and Bengay.  I use both heavily when I get banged up (as stated earlier, we don’t heal as quick as we get older).  They work wonders for me.

It's coming along nicely, OC.   I like the little touch of the brick in the pond.  I gather you'll put some more on the ground under the places they were hacked out?

Thank you kinldy Mark,      Indeed  - both sides of the wall, I might even mess around making some random rain puddles using my gel  - seeing as it was so wet the night before with pooring rain  the whole ground was sturated.

Pond looks great, especially since it's was for the ducks. A few puddles will really make the ground "pop". Coming along nicely.

Evening all,  more work around the pond  -  I  cleaned up the slabs around the pond  then put down a few layers of  stone, then I did the same to the base around the pond,  and after some washes and dust, and finished with a couple of coats of flat.

Good day all,   bit of an early post  -  next stage with this  I think I will be playing with some tables and  placing some KGL  around the  pond  firing from the walls,    I think it will be easier to do it that way than trying to see what I am doing when its all constructed.

Evening all,    so  where were we?   ah yes  adding some details around the pond  -  the KGL lads  were desperate for firing platforms, so they raided the kitchen and found a couple of tables and benches  "perfect job"  these were positioned inside the wall between the brick holes.

First though  mr giant had to  assemble and paint/weather them then glue them in place.

Ok good start but needs some figures  - so I got my completed box out  and chose a few 2nd KGL to start with, first job was to carefuly remove the plastic bases they are moulded to  - had to be careful not to cut into thier feet,   then a little CA underneath  and they were glued down.

So its a start  and much easier with room to move them around.

Evening all,  Back on doing  some figures  -  as I was going to try out my airbrush  using the vallejo  acrylic primer, my first  job was to make my ultra expensive cardboard box spray booth,   I went the technical route and used  celotape  and a sharp blade  - so I cut a part roof out and frontage.

I took my compressor out of its box  - same with my airbrush  (reminded me of a fancy  fountain pan)  I unwraped  the airline  conected one end to the compressor  and went to attach the other to the airbrush   "where is the coupler to screw in"   "ah sussed it"  found it  with the spare  filter bowl  - then "hey pressto"  it just  pushes on with a click.

I adjusted the pressure to aboit 1.5 turned it on  "wow  its quiet"  I poored a bit of un diluted vallejo primer  (next time perhaps it needs a bit of diluting)?  as it dried very quick in the airbrush bowl  (should I have stired it while using it)?    anyway   the trigger has a double action  - down and  front/back  it was a bit fiddly to find a sweet spot so I just pressed it down and mainly fully back  and sprayed away on Three of my KGL figures.

No worries even first attempt the  primer went on smooth and a nice thin layer - "very impressed".

So  I used my  airbrush cleaner and blasted it thorugh several times till all the primer had gone and it was fully clean, carried on just blowing ar through it then to make sure it was clean.

Anyway  here is the result  and my set up  including my first brushed on pink layers  for faces and hands  - stage one of the skin laywers.

Looks great OC. You made a good choice for your 1st airbrush. You will gets years of fun with it.

In your spare time, practice spraying the airbrush on card or paper to get a better feel for everything you can do with it. As you pull back on the trigger, you increase the amount of paint coming out of it. Pull back little and you can paint very fine lines. Pull back more and the line width will increase. With practice, you will become comfortable with how much is enough for the particular task.

Thank you for the advice Craig  (certainly a new experience for me)   how about the compressor pressure - I set it to 1.5bar, is that about right for most acrylic paints used with it?

Sounds about right. Here in the USA, I use a pounds per square inch (PSI) scale rather than bars, but the conversion is 1.5 bars = approximately 22 PSI. The thicker your paint, the more pressure you will need to push it out of the brush. When you are doing large work and need high paint volume, you turn the pressure up. When you are doing fine work, you thin the paint and turn the pressure down a bit. It's something you will have to experiment with to get the hang of it. Vallejo Air paints are supposed to be ready to spray through your airbrush straight from the bottle, but sometimes I may need to add a drop or two of thinner to get it to behave properly through my airbrush.

I set my pressure at the compressor around 24 PSI, then I use a second air valve to regulate my pressure down at the airbrush. With this valve, I adjust it by feel, not by a gauge since I already know the pressure is 24 PSI on the high end, I just adjust it down according to my particular need, testing it on a piece of paper or scrap plastic first before spraying my model.

Look on youtube. There are a ton of good videos on how to use the airbrush as well as how to thin the various paints.

Congratulations on your first air brush session. I use any left over paint in the cup to experiment on a piece of cardboard to learn about distance, pressure, trigger position (mine is a double action brush too). I'm still trying to get away from trigger down and fully back for everything and learn to use the part positions for finer lines. I think that is a key skill for free hand use of the air brush.

The figures have very dynamic poses and great faces. Its hard to remember that they are not 54mm

Great Stuff

Thank you Alan,   I guess its that dexterity situation of getting used to fine adjutments and knowing how to control the flow.

Good job on your first airbrush session. Great info from Craig and Alan.

I've read and seen on the YouTube vids a technique to put a drop or two of flow improver into the paint cup with your conditioned paint. Opinions, gents?
