BTW, from a Japanese manufacturer you can get very small studded chain, that is printed in 3D ...

Well worth a visit Eberhard. It was very quiet when a group of friends and I went about 15 years ago. She was in the early stages of preparation for display and a very obliging volunteer took us on a very detailed tour of the engine room -- quickly curtailed when we realised the restoration crew were hacking lumps of asbestos off the steam pipes. Clearly asbestos regulations are not always the same.

I like the ships of this era: you see modern times coming, but it is not really there.

 

How did you make the flags? Just printed double sided, or...?

second question: you showed two other ships you started, but I cant find the logs of those. Did I miss them, or didn't you start a log?

Although I have been model-making for nearly 65 years, I have never attempted a scratch build. This example is truly magnificent, all the more so for being in 1/700 scale - and it's been a pleasure following the steps taken to arrive at the finished model.

While finding real thin 1/700 chain is a challenge there is a way to make a decent one relatively easy.

Just unstrip a cable and remove 3 pieces of the extra thin copper wire.

Then knot them together as shown on pic, like making a girl's pigtail.

The difference with a commercial chain is noticeable

Copper wire down to 0.05 mm is readily available from electronic supply stores or through the Internet.

 

For small unstudded chains, such as used for hand-rails, I developed the following procedure: take two wires of the diameter that is appropriate for the scale wire diameter of your prototype; twist them together, so that the length of each twist is about the length of scale chain link; half the twisted wire and twist together the two halfs into the opposite direction with the same amount of twists - the result looks like a twisted chain. May need a bit of practice to get this done smooth and evenly.

 

For galvanized chain - common from the late 1840s onward, I start with either blackened copper-wire and slightly dry-bush it in silver, or I take tinned copper-wire and let black ink/acrylic run into the depressions after twisting.

 

For anchor-chains, of course, you need to check the protype dimensions and chose the right scale link sizes - there is no 'one-size-fits-all' or something like '1/700 scale anchor chain' ...
