Milestone Reached

The cockpit sides are complete! The only cockpit element left to install is the gunsight, which is a ridiculously delicate 3D-printed piece and will therefore be added much later. I wrestled with whether to add some more details that are not included in the kit, e.g., the elevator trim contol cable on the left side and the mass of cables and tubing on the floor along the right side (plastic kits typically have these elements molded in). I'm leaning toward not adding these details because:

  • They would require a lot of extra work.
  • There are no templates for making them.
  • To see them, a viewer would have to pick up the model in order to peer into the cockpit's inky depths.
  •  Anyone who dares to pick up one of my models risks being on the receiving end of bodily harm.

That last one clinches the decision, I think. Here are some final interior photos -- the next step is to glue the sides to the cockpit framing. 😮

What a gorgeous model, Chris. You really have the card models building down to a science. It's amazing to me how realistic the card models you build turn out. In my opinion, they look better that 99% of traditional, injection molded kits. Maybe in part that's due to the precise and beautiful color of the printed card, but mostly due to your skill in building it.

Thanks, Craig! I've gone bright red! It's interesting to compare building in card to building in plastic. The best plastic modelers are the folks who are skilled at airbrushing and weathering. A good card model has those effects already printed on the kit parts, and the hard part is cutting, shaping, and making tidy seams. I'm still nowhere near the talent of the best card modelers from Europe, but I keep trying!

Beautiful work Chris!  I've probably said it a dozen times before on your logs, but it's impressive how you can manage the complicated compound curves.  This is looking really great!  The aftermarket will really kick it up a notch!  It's nice that the AM is from 3D printing, as resin parts can add considerable weight.

I'm realizing that the nice thing about these card kits is that you can horde them and have a stash 5% of the size of a similarly numbered plastic/resin/ printed kits.  On top of that, you don't necessarily need to outfit yourself with an airbrush, compressor, spray booth, etc. - things that take up a lot of space.

Moving on to the wings. The wing framing is built around a single main spar. Wicking CA into it seemed sensible.

image.jpeg.4ae9c9a4837192baac7e4d1e34f2b1bc.jpeg

And here is the finished framing.

image.jpeg.bfe91f08b9ebee1cfe9e5cb56c54834b.jpeg

The kit includes optional parts to show the model with flaps deployed, but since flaps typically aren't deployed while an aircraft is on the ground, I will be displaying them raised. And besides, adding the flaps adds a large number of fiddly parts.

Here, the main wing skins have been shaped and trial-fitted. Still work to do before they get glued on.

By now, I have collected a large number of Halinski kits and have yet to try a start on a single one.

Craig, I don't remember you having built any card models? Attempting a Halinski build as a first effort would be a real challenge. Some of the newer WAK skill level 2 kits look like very good models for newcomers, and they typically have excellent artwork. I keep thinking about doing one of them -- I probably should, just to see how they go together and evaluate their suitability for beginners.

The first Halinski kit I built successfully was their Polikarpov I-16, and I don't recall having any issues with it.

No, I have only started one (a brand I do not recall) and it was a disaster. I will look it up and try a WAK skill 2 kit as a first try. Thanks!

Craig, I have the following WAK Skill Level 2 kits in my stash. Check them out, and if you want to do a "group build" of one of them, I'd be happy to model the process for you using that kit -- modeling how to build a model, hah! I'm probably not the first person to think of that. The kits are all designed by Lech Kolodziejski -- I've built five of his designs.

SBLim-2

Moran-Saulnier 406C1

Bloch MB.152C1

I order directly from WAK using PayPal and have always been happy with their service and shipping rates.

Did you order the laser-cut frames and canopy to go with it? Makes the job much easier.

Before skinning the wings, the landing gear bays must first be added.

image.jpeg.f4e08bd9549d1e9eb7df7a3b271261f7.jpeg

Then the main skin is added. I don't glue the entire thing at once -- I tack the center section first to get everything aligned, then work around each half a bit at a time. The fit has been super tight, but good.

image.jpeg.b76661e7f933522e71ff9dd57e68d686.jpeg

You don't get to see the bottom yet, because I still need to do the seams around the gear bays.

Cheers!
