HMS Victory by guraus - scale 1:48 - plank on frame

Recommended Posts

Hello all and thank you for the comments and compliments.

Here is a very small update on the fore capstan. As the main one, the upper part is not completed yet as I will wait for the actual beams of the middle deck to be done for a more accurate setting.

Thank you,

Alexandru

Hello all

I've done some progress on the middle deck beams - 20 out of 29. But I have enough to get the height of the deck so I could continue working on the main capstan. Here are some progress pictures:

Hi Alexandru,

Beautiful craftsmanship. A joy to look at.

I just noticed the red inboard planking, coming right down to the deck. Did you paint/stain each piece before installing, or did you install, mask and then paint?

Best wishes,

Mark

Thank you Mark.

The red planking is actualy red wood called bloodwood. I didn't have to paint it at all. In fact nothing is painted on my model, just different colors of wood.

Hello all again,

Here is another update mainly on the tiler installation. I was quite surprised how well it actually works! Pulling the two strings will actually make the rudder turn and wit only minimal resistance.

Hi Alexandru, What wonderful work as usual. How you find the time to work with such precision and attention to detail is simply amazing. When you were saying about getting the tiller to move I was reminded of the 74-gun model made with my father 20-odd years ago. We were able to rig the ropes to the wheel drum and get the tiller to move by turning the wheel! I'll be very surprised if you don't do the same! How much detail do you intend to fill in on the lower gun deck? Guns and their rigging? Ropes and tackles to raise the gun ports? racks with the gun operating tools? There are also knees to the transom and rear most beams?

Very best wishes from an admiring fan

Bob

Hello Bob,

Thanks for watching.

I do plan to get the ropes to the wheel and make it work if I can - have to finish a couple more decks until then though...

As for the level of detail I will add on the lower deck, what you see is pretty much what it will be. For sure there will be no guns. Gun ports maybe but the ropes and tackles to rise them probably not. No racks and no tools for the guns. No tables, benches and any other stuff for sailor accommodation either.

One thing that I am working on and I want to add are the stanchions with the rope handrail around the ladders. The stanchions will be turned out of brass - I've already done a couple of tries and not very happy with the results. I'll post some pictures as soon as I get some I like.

Bob,

I was thinking about doing that but I had quite poor results with the soldering so I said that having them made from one piece will help. The only issue I have with turning (aside of the necessary time to do them) is that they are quite thin (close to 1mm diameter at the end) and I have to support the free end to actually turn them at that size even if they are short (15mm).

I'll post picture with the results and you will see what I've got.

Bob,

Here are the pictures as promissed.

In second picture are the tries in order from left to right. First one without free end support is scrap, the other two are ok.  Last picture is final product with the hole for the rope drilled. The more I do the better results I have and I am quite happy with them. Takes me about 5 minutes to turn one as I have to drill a centre hole for the live centre then change tool a couple of times, take it out and cut it from the longer stock then turn the other end (picture 4).
