Nice work on the headrails and the baseboard, Caroline.  And the lights.... can't say enough for how they bring a ship to life.  Lovely job.

Stunning work. Having lurked on your log and others and having now just started my Fly model - I begin to realise why your work is so impressive. Are you planning to expose through the decks or somewhere else all of those internal details? They are amazing.

Next I masked of the areas to be painted blue and got my paintbrush out, after using the brass scrollwork as a guide, attached the thin black strips, once these were stuck, I glued on the decorative brass:

I made gunport lids and modified the provided brass hinges so that they would open and close:

Port gunports made and waiting for their hinges:

Here is where I am currently at at the moment. I have made and attached the hinges for the gunports on the port side except for one.

Great hinge-fitted and operational gunport lid Vulcanbomber,

seldom seen with Fly and Pegasus, well done !

Hi guys, thanks for your comments.

I am still around - have no fear, I will be back!!

Life is just very busy at the moment, we've had a few things happening - some good, some not so - and life has changed for us at the moment.

I have managed to fit two guns under the quarterdeck and have started on the third one. Will take some pics when I can.

Hi Caroline

It's great to see you cracking on with Pegasus again. Your log was one I followed and studied when I started and I look forward to your updates. Aside from your amazing cabin details (too late for me to add) we are at about the same point in the build I think. Any way, having another Swan Class build in progress on the forum is great.

Cheers

Hello Crackers and Alistair, thanks for looking in.

Crackers, I have just updated my Aggie stitch log here. It was overdue for an update!

Alistair, I've had a look at your log and you've done some lovely work. I have also seen some refinements in Andy's log I'd like to try and incorporate into my build. You are both producing some amazing work.

I'm finally trying to get my head around coppering Pegasus' hull. Whats the best way to go about this?

I've looked at a few build logs and I'm not sure how to work it all out with the triangular fillers, how do I know where to start these?

HELP!! I'm about ready to crawl back into my hole!! :(

Hi Caroline

I didn't use any triangular fillers at all. According to the FFM they weren't used on a hull of this size. See page 17 onwards in my log. B.E went the same way. You start at the keel and work upwards using overlaps to to increase the upward curvature at the stem and stern as you go. I tried to follow the lines of the planking and I think there is a stern shot in my log that shows this.

Sometimes I had to trim the end of a strip to get a good flow to the next strip. I worked in strips of two to three tiles for the bigger overlaps but used strips of five tiles for the straighter runs. I sort of just felt it out as I went. The only tiles I cut into triangles were those that met the bead at the waterline. Also worth noting that there are port and starboard tiles - the rivet positions are different for each.

I wasted a lot of tiles to start with but once I got into a groove it became much easier and wastage disappeared.

Any way best bet is not to triangulate at all but to overlap. I trust B.E agrees!

P.S. Happy to take some close ups of the pattern if that'd help but it would have to be soon - off on holiday shortly...

Hi Alistair, Thanks for the info, I've had a look at your coppering and it looks great, there is a lot of useful information. Yes, that would be great if you could take a few pics of your coppering, it would help me greatly.

Okay - have started the coppering and it is something I don't like, I think I'll stick to planking hulls - that I can do!

The kit has etched sheets for the coppering, it was easy to seperate them into strips - no cutting needed, simply bend along the 'score lines' and they easily come apart.

I marked the waterline using my trusty 'helping hands':

post-3-0-87613300-1420408295_thumb.jpg

First I put copper strips along the keel bottom edge. I found sticking a strip centrally along the keel the overlapping edges could be bent down easily. I did this first for a neater finish:

post-3-0-74997800-1420408244_thumb.jpg

Then I planked the sides of the keel:

post-3-0-66433200-1420408334_thumb.jpg

Then I proceeded with the first row of plates:

After three rows:

Well, I've completed the coppering on one side. Not as perfect as I'd like, but for my first attempt it's not too bad, hopefully the other side will be better.

I kept the tiles in their strips for the longer runs. The rows overlapped quite a bit at midships, then curved upwards towards the bow and stern. I found it quite difficult to try and keep the rows level in places and I had to be careful not to let the plates 'buckle' when trying to lay the row.

Not too keen on this first experience of coppering, maybe after the other side is done i may feel a bit more confident.

I didn't realise how much I hated doing the coppering, until I looked at the date of my last post. Wow is it really 4 years?!!

Well I thought it was about time Pegasus had her bottom completed! I have a bit more time now, but still not as much as I would like.

The first pic is where I left off 4 years ago, and now she is done. I still don't like coppering and I think it will be the first and last time I will do it, but I don't think it has turned out too bad.
