back in the shipyard and we now have the foreyard and sail in place though only held in place with the chain sling at the moment, will follow same procedure as main mast regards lifts etc. take care all and thanks for viewing. Keith

Thanks for likes , looking in , and comments everyone. Didnt realise a couple of months has passed since last update (distracted by 1/35 armour again)! Back with Terror and hoisting the foreyard and course are getting nearer, will need to add footropes to the yard and rig the chain slings. The black thread with the loops on the yard are the truss pendants. Take care all. Keith

the flower class corvettes were actually steam powered as opposed to diesel engines, but i agree would be nice to see an engine in there.

see my log for ships bell and fife rails at foremast, the binnacle question had me and keithS wondering, i think they might have used a modern portable compass patented in the years just before the expedition. Keith

TY Portsoy, i havent seen any evidence for coppering on the hull , as johnny says no need to worry about worm in polar waters. she did have gudgeons on the sternpost for the rudder which might give the look of plating from an angle. the kit does come with a three bladed prop but as you have seen from pics she had a two bladed prop (i used a spare from billings boats from their mary ann kit and trimmed it to size). as johnny points out ships morph with use, the dredger you see on my profile pic was built in 1926 and was mothballed in 1993ish being scrapped in 1998 , she lost her port platform/ wooden lifeboat/davits and her starboard davits were reduced to one with a gemini inflatable replacing the wooden lifeboat, also the original steam powered crane was replaced with a diesel one (it is this condition in the pic) however as you can see she kept her coal fired steam engine til the very end! as regards endurance there is a nice pic of the ice sheathing on the bows in one of the crew photos.i will most likely not model the kennels either. another thing i notyiced is it looks like they altered the funnel guy wires to run over the railings to the bulwarks to clear the kennels (you can see the railings bent out of line with the strain). cant go wrong with an average of 12 feet full size for plankingfor the deck as a general rule- the second planking on the hull really does look good. Keith

well observed with the skid beams for the forward boats, i will most likely make new davits from brass rod rather than use occres. Keith

Thanks Johnny- i am building the railings in sections which can be removed for painting -the three at the front finish half way through the ball joint with the side pieces bent to shape to interlock when finished. I used superglue once i was happy with the dry fit. I am just going to model the steering without deckhouse as not enough info. Keith

thanks for looking in everyone, after storm arwen has swept through we have calm with frost brrrrrr, however feels more like endurance weather! ye olde copper tape has been used for the metal plating on the prow and the prop is in place along with a start on the railings on the ritz and the galley chimney. Actually bought 12mm railing stanchions by caldercraft from cornwall model boats along with 0.7mm brass wire. take care all Keith

i think the balls are just decorative forms of mast caps- well done and those extra researched details really set her off. Keith

Hi Johnny- we use the copper strip for repairing edge connectors on circuit boards at work, but people who make dolls houses use it for making lighting conduit- do a search on copper dolls house tape if no joy with electronic suppliers. Keith

Ty Johnny and thanks for likes/ looking in everyone. Carried out a bit more work on the funnel, it actually had a "bell mouth" top which i worked in with a pair of small pliers, the bands are cut from self adhesive copper strip. The steam pipe according to pics and the plans for polaris i bought went more or less to the top of the funnel with the whistle actually only reaching half way up. Also carried out work on the deck house (Ritz) bit of a mystery though as on the plans for Polaris there are three arch topped windows where occre have two portholes and a door. However all the other square windows on the plans are portholes on the photos (i.e. the portholes along the stern island) so decided to make it three portholes with the doors moved to correct positions. Also planked the walls as per photos. Tomorrow our local model railway show is back on after being cancelled last year (will have to try not to break the bank on the traders stands)!
