  1. Just about at the same point with my small group planning the summer fishing getaway. 3 days away and we have 'material' that lasts a whole year. Don't rush those ship's boats! She's so close now. Connie can wait!
  2. Great to see your progress and a terrific job to boot. Do they call for tapering the stem at all? Just curious.
  3. Thanks Mark. Yup, what my Admiral calls 'the hole in your boat' will be the display side as she has already determined she's going the wrong way. Wait until she finds out the masts are only 4" high . I'm doomed. But it's all part of the plan my friend. She'll be so relieved to hear that the next one, according to her wishes, will be fully 'complete' and set to sail in the right direction (even if it comes in at 40" + loa).
  4. Nice start, Mark. Please get that keel trimmed --- it throws everything off Your framing comes in April?
  5. Ben beat me to it on the fairing. When you do get to the final fairing take your time. Having a hard time visualizing your stem issue. All I can say is if the fit is tight against the BF with the notch sitting in the right place you'll be fine.
  6. It's funny, I'm doing just about the same thing you are at the moment on my stern. I wish us both patience. On your brass tarnish, I've heard this product works pretty well.....but I never tried it myself: http://www.micromark.com/flitz-50-gram-tube,7082.html
  7. Hahaha. Been happening since they shrunk the Hershey bar back in the 50's. Just noticed that they have shrunken the size of 5 pound bags of sugar (standard since the time of the Romans) to 4 pounds. Keeps the price steady.
  8. CONGRATULATIONS on a job well done. She is gorgeous all around. The model, bottle and ropework used in the display are all wonderfully synergistic.
  9. On the spongy boards, regular old stain won't hold them. But if you are planning to overcoat the stain with some flat polyurethane you may get some strength from that.
  10. Any thoughts as to starting up a build log? I can never see enough of McKay clippers.
  11. I like John's suggestion as well. But keep in mind, he works in a museum!!!!!! Thanks to all for stopping by.
  12. I wish you good fortune on this project. The plans alone are suitable for framing I'll be following (and drooling).
  13. My understanding is that planks of approximately 25-30 feet would have been used on the full scale ship.
  14. The finishing of the lower hull has been completed. In addition, all of the touching up on the painted areas has been done. I decided to retain the natural finish of the lower hull. As I wanted it lighter to contrast the above wale hull, I gave it a coat of Minwax Pre-Stain (I always use this on basswood), one coat of plain 'natural' stain. 2 coats of poly and one coat of dull acrylic. It actually looks almost untreated but that's what I wanted. In the photos it's the final one that shows the finished effect. Thanks to everyone for offering your suggestions on the color. I'll save the 'white stuff' idea for another model. The Admiral is steaming but nothing that dinner and a show won't solve. She has also decided that I'm planning on displaying her 'in the wrong direction ...... again !! But that's normal. No sense having those exposed framing beams on 'the wall side'. Need to add those moldings we made weeks ago and then onto the stern galleries
  15. A well deserved congratulations. Very majestic, indeed. I'll be looking to see your decision on the flag and the deployment of the ship's boat. Do you plan to case her?
