  1. now that they've looked at her and are satisfied with the job you did on her, are they going to crate it, or are you? here's hoping all goes smoothly and she has left the building..........a job well done! is there an echo in the room now?
  2. I bookmarked a video of a guy doing that!!!.........sadly, I dumped it, thinking that I'd never get up the 'brass' to do it. I've also seen the individual planked deck method too..........I did it with a Revell U.S.S. United States kit {there is a log}........and yes......drove me bonkers doing it you still got very nice results, even though you had to make a few modifications. I like the scale deck coloration........adds more to the deck than just one color wood. I did some reading about the Trumpeter Arizona, and found out that it too has a few inaccuracies. for the money, I shied away from it, not wanting to make that many modifications. I'm finding this true about the Revell kit.......but in it's defense, the kit has always been like this........they made no improvements all these years no doubt the 'bizz' suffers from the same affliction
  3. when I created mine, I took into account of the scale and the arrangement. since the kit went with four shroud lines, I went with it, but for the main and perhaps the fore shrouds, I may add a fifth and leave the rest for back stays. i haven't made provision yet for the back stay {or two}, that will be done as a pennant and block. I feel that I might have made my channels a bit too short too, but I'm not sure if there is a solid rule for the axis of the shroud or back stay lines, as the mast supports. I used the supplied dead eyes.........looking at the kit directions, they don't really show any for the second step masting. they would likely be smaller.......perhaps 3 mm. most model companies don't take this into account though, since this isn't the first time I've seen this. for the rigging line, I don't have a clue what the larger stuff would be used for....I wouldn't use it either. all standing rigging should be done in black, if you want it to look right. given the different way that companies designate how they measure their thread, I couldn't tell you. I pretty much go with what I see........I use a beading thread that will do well for me on this model {I know I have a picture somewhere.......but I can't find one}. it would give you an idea of how thick it is. the other two light tan thread would be good to use....use the thicker line on the lower and haul lines, and thinner stuff for the dead eyes and upper lines. a good example here would be to use thicker lines for the lifts and halyards, and thinner lines for the sheet and clew lines. I see your setting up a jig for the spacing of the dead eyes, for when you do the lanyards {the dead eye assembly}. I made up one....I should make up others in different lengths, for other models. I wouldn't change the channels......since you've done the cap rails, it will be a rather big job. when doing the shrouds, start on the starboard side, a pair at a time. make a loop at the top, sieze them together, feed them through the hole in the top, and jig the length of the shroud line at the dead eyes. some will sieze around the threads, some wrap the thread around the shroud and glue, tying the seizing rope afterwards. with the absence of black thread and size problems, most don't use the supplied thread, and go with what they feel will look better.
  4. I'd be happy with your results.......I've never done one before. I bought the Revell Arizona kit and wanted to do one on it, but no one makes one for it. I guess I'll have to live with a painted one. they look very nice though well done.
  5. looks like an awful lot of work......be interesting to see how the hull comes out
  6. saw her in the gallery Greg........absolutely masterful build very well done !
  7. looks great with the turrets on..........very well done!
  8. looks like a very interesting project. I've been looking at the Billing's version of the Titanic......that kit has a couple of issues too. depending on how much narrowing there is, it might not be a concern....too much, and well then you would have to deal with it. you could shim the bulkheads along the outer edges and add to the overall width......or if they are full bulkheads, you could split them and add it in from the center board.
  9. seriously nice model lots of very well done detail...........you did tracer bullets!
  10. sorry to hear of the mishap Lou.........glad to hear that things are getting better. get well wishes to your admiral I was glad to finally read your log....I haven't been on long enough lately to get any meaningful reading done. nor have I been in the mood to spend time at the table....too preoccupied in my thoughts. to make matters worse, the admiral has been berating me about all my projects........the last couple of days, I've given her even more reason to question my sanity I'm sure you'll get get back to the table soon enough........now that your looking at a hull, the allure of adding to it must have a very strong pull. as for me, I've got to get off my duff and get busy too. I think I owe you an e-mail...........
  11. she's looking splendid Marc....good to see your getting some play time in
  12. in regards to the solid towers, you could look at Plastruct and Evergreen......they carry hollow tubes. if the towers are of a hyperboloid or of a tripod style construction, you might be able to scratch build them using the hollow tubes. this would be a good way to wire the lights without them being seen.
  13. thankfully, you won't be plagued with bending planks. but you might be doing some tapering and nibbing the hull came out just fine........nothing that a little filler can't fix. if you are second planking it, I wouldn't even bother with the filler.......just sand till the contours are right. you do have to admit though.....that is a very blunt bow. what's even funnier {I think}....is that you can plank the same hull frame again, and it won't come out the same. heck........I've experienced that!!! the deck should be a cake walk for you
  14. catching up with your project JP...........mastings look very nice they will look really good when added to the model!
  15. this is just so perfect........starting the log at this point in time. these are some amazing pictures Greg....if you can put that much detail into the finished model, it will be one fantastic looking model! if all that PE comes to fruition, the detail will certainly be realized I can't wait to see how you modify the hull......... WOW!
  16. my Half Moon was like that........although it was sent to me for parts rather than to build. when Tom closed down his store, the kit was used to settle customer service complaints.......the kit was not complete. I scratch built the missing parts and brought it almost to the point of rigging. poor thing is sitting on top of the main table.......I was meaning to bring her back out, but went off on another tangent {yea.......that's what us unstable folks call it}. I just went through another Q&A about my projects ..........I better go make supper {I need comfort food}.
