Nice progress and a good save, Ed! I wonder why the TG stays were rigged first?

I don't know about Byzantine ships, but usually deck beams have the same round-up all along the deck and are simply different lengths.

What a repetitive job! Neat result, though.

Many early models show no bobstay, and I would agree that the jib outhaul passes through a block at the side of the stem.

Atlantis by Thistle17 - FINISHED - Robbe

Lovely work, Joe. Have a safe trip transporting her (or should that be 'herself'?) to her new berth. -
When forming brass - or silver, for that matter - one cannot anneal too often. If you don't, the metal will tear. Beautifully done, Michael. That is a tough shape to achieve.

Using a moulding scraper tool?
druxey replied to alde's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
My watchmakers' screw slotting files go down to a little under 0.010" wide. Unlike fret files, they cut a square bottom slot. Jewellers' saw blades are a good and cheaper alternative! -
Using a moulding scraper tool?
druxey replied to alde's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Any guitar fret file I've ever seen is far larger and rounded compared to the minute watchmakers' screw slotting ones. -

It's not cheap, but a watchmakers' screw slotting file is perfect for fine detailed profiles. -
Chuck's comments on planking (post #131) are right on. We have so many older books that have brainwashed us into wrestling straight planks into shapes they can't assume, using so many clamps, pins and hold-downs of every variety. Most of this received wisdom needs to be challenged. If you planks are properly spiled and shaped, of a suitable specie of wood to the correct thickness, bent using moisture, heat or a combination thereof, you should never need to clamp them!

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
