  1. Gerhard, I think those half-rounds are the vents. I thought that also until I went back and compared the photo to the plan. I'm not seeing anything on the plan within a reasonable distance to those winches. No hatches, no booms.
  2. A beautiful prop there, Keith. Nice work, indeed. Nothing wrong with watching paint/varnish dry. I do it early then read MSW and sometimes take a nap... although naps lately have been impossible due to dog seeing me doze off decides suddenly that it's play time.
  3. Keith, I've been using Wipe-on-Poly lately but in the past I used spray on. I've not tried any of shellacs or varnishes.
  4. Thanks for the likes and the comments. Thanks Daniel. I daresay you are right about the beauty of the French ships... and not just the lines. I'm leaning towards a French ship for the next build although I'm still thinking about the Roebuck (British).
  5. What an astounding looking deck, Keith. I think you've captured a big part of the beauty of these boats.
  6. Ron, PM Chuck. He seems to be the most active member of staff. Otherwise, go back to the first post, hit report and put in the suggestions of pinning it.
  7. John, Much has been lost, but much is still around. I'll also add that much is hidden away and forgotten about as recent discoveries in museums have pointed out. If you need to include waterlines...I'd only do the last two.. I'd think those would reflect real-world usage.
  8. Thanks for the likes and comments. Just a few shop notes... the metal bands at the top are black construction paper. Even though they will be hidden, I just wasn't getting the look I wanted from brass. I still need the nails. Ah silver soldering... I'm still working on the rudder straps. I made about 30 of them and discarded all but the best ten. I'm happy with what I kept but I should probably practice some more. I tried some Blacken-it I had lying around and when it hit the silver solder it put a green sludge down. So tossed the Blacken-it and the test part. I've ordered some Birchwood Casey Pewter Black... they say good for brass and solder... If that doesn't work, I'll paint them with some flat black primer. Primer has a bit of texture. I'll need the blackening anyway when it comes time for cannon but that's a ways off yet.
  9. Those are some wonderful displays, Gil. I'll assume the next ship might not be as large then?
  10. I hope all goes well on this move with everything undamaged. Moves are always traumatic no matter how many times you do them. See you when you're back. And congrats on selling the caravan.
  11. Have you PM'd Chuck? Or been to his website? There's an email addy there.
  12. Les, Whatever works for you, is what I would say. You could also use silver paint instead of All Clad and then gloss coat them.
  13. Congratulations on a great model of a well-used sponge boat, Mehmet. If it were photographed on beach, I think most would think it's the real thing.
  14. Ron, This is a great tutorial. Thanks for sharing and removing the mystery of 3-D printing.
  15. I'll try the acid bath. Nothing to lose but a few parts.
  16. Second planking???? You're going to cover up what you've done? Or did I miss something? Looking very good, Chris.
  17. Allan, The parts were blackened about 5 years ago and have taken a beating in the storage container. Some turned green so I'm thinking of cleaning the crud off and blackening using the Birchwood Casey product. I tried some acetone and also vinegar but doesn't remove it completely. I'd just hate to toss all the nails and eyebolts, etc.
  18. Truer words were never spoken, Piet. And the MSW members do seem to push (myself included) a bit... I'm doing stuff I only thought about because of people like you.
  19. The "likes", comments, and questions/challenges appreciated..... So... pushing the envelope... I've reworked the rudder and added some metalwork. It looks a lot better. The metal banding will have the appropriate amount of nails in it before this piece is ready to mount. Edit: I forgot to add... I cut it apart using a thin jeweler's saw and then glued it back together using some colored glue. And a couple of quick shots of the rudder irons/straps in work. I started by annealing the straps. I silver solder the tube, cut-off the excess, and clean it up with a file. For the pintle, a 1/16" brass rod will be epoxied into the tube. The cudgeon will not have the shaft, naturally. I should note that these are not cleaned up yet. So far, so good. I've got a pile of brass pieces now pickling in some vinegar. I'll rinse well and let dry overnight. I'm thinking of using paint on these or hitting the local gunshop tomorrow for some Birchwood Casey's. In testing, Blacken-It did nothing for the silver solder. I've got some discards painted and drying and I'll how they look.
  20. Is there anyway to remove Blacken-it from brass? I have some very tiny parts that were blackened a few years ago but they need re-blackening and I want to remove the old stuff first.
