  1. Very nicely done. She's looking sweet. As for a figurehead, I'm not sure there would have been one especially on a merchant vessel.
  2. Those frames are massive.... wonderful work Rusty.
  3. mij, If I may be so bold... how about starting a build log in the Scratch area, rather than here? This area is for reviews of books and magazines which is what this thread started out to be.
  4. Nice work and great pictures of the real thing. As for the rivet issue.. maybe a variation of a pouce wheel, but instead of making depressions or holes, use it to put down painted "dots" to simulate rivets. The question would be: "will anyone notice if they're NOT there?". I think it's similar to the issue with treenailing a wooden ship. If not visible at normal viewing distance, why do them, other than to know they are there?
  5. Richard, I'd bet dollars to donuts that they're "generic" much like the MicroMark. I've used the generics from Lowe's on my Micromark without issue. Just periodically clean off any remaining glue using some alcohol.
  6. Augie, Nice work. Good choice on the pencil sander. I'm finding a ton of uses for mine as I can control it a lot better than a Dremel.
  7. Ferit, Good to hear you are not giving up. Whew... I have the same competition urges at times, but have to remember that the only one I'm competing with is me. And that competition is to make each part as good as I can. I've found if I remember that, I get better. The Corel problem isn't uncommon. I think all the manufacturers misrepresent things on their kits. Sometimes it's major like making up a history and having a fictitious ship, other times it's minor like having the wrong size parts. The scale issue is a tough call. It's possible that they really don't what scale it is because they made the parts and wood sizes such to fit into a box of a standard size. If you can, get a copy of the plan and check the measurements. It could be close to the 1:50 but not exact. My Constellation was that way. What they called it for scale was off by a fair amount. I compensated and was happy.
  8. Ian, My apologies. I'm just catching up and am saddened by the loss of your furry shop steward. The stove is an incredible bit of modeling. Wow!!!!!!
  9. NIce work on an interesting vessel, Mick. We haven't seen too many of the non-gun type ships. I'll pull up a seat next to Sjors and popcorn machine when you get back to her.
  10. You'e off and running with an excellent start, Edward. I'm looking forward to seeing this one take shape.
  11. Piet, Over the years, I've seen rivets made not just from brass (commercial or home-made) but from drops of paint using a toothpick to black nylon bristles from a broom. You'll have to do some testing if you decide to go the "home made" route to see what looks best at your scale.
  12. Water will cause CA to instantly cure and it will turn right in the process. Since acrylics are water based, I'll leave the result to the imagination. I'm not a chemist, just someone who's screwed up more than once.
  13. Ferit, I hope Berlin won't be the last... Beautiful work on the rigging to complement the work of the hull. In those pictures, the lighting gives just the right mood.
  14. Don't think I can say anything that hasn't been said but I won't get into an Aggy log with a real Aggy in it... Just wonderful work, Mobbsie. I really like the looks of her.
  15. Andy, What Peter said... you deserve the praise. A fantastic job going on there.
  16. I'm just hoping there's real daylight available instead of moonlight so we can see the ship.
  17. Robbyn, Great job on the rigging. I agree, we all have to overlook the self-induced flaws our builds. When the time is right, the right dog will be there for you. But sometimes, the right time is when we least expect it.
  18. Ah... made it just in time.... <slides into chair>
  19. Er... no I won't. I'm mellowing out.... 41 days and counting. Yes, there is a not so subtle irony on planking a POF and framing a POB. But that's what makes this hobby so dang much fun.
  20. Yes, it works very well. The only downside is that if for some reason you delete your photobucket account or pictures, we get a small box with red-x's. Anyway, good to know that it's working and working well.
  21. Breath-taking work as always Karl. I love coming to your log.
  22. Admiral Sjors By the way, your ratlines look super nice.
  23. I can't help with running gear, but Model Expo and Bluejack both sell such items. They sell by "size" and not by scale on those....
