HMS Winchelsea 1764 by Rustyj - FINISHED - 1:48

Recommended Posts

I have completed the first 4 rows of the wales and the fifth row being the black strake.

These strakes will have a second layer added to them later. All five strakes are 7/32" x 3/64".

Here's the wales first layer in all their dirty glory. As you can see I also use some old table cloths

laid out on the work bench to protect the model while out of it's build board and planking etc.

I've started cutting the 1/4" x 3/64" planks for the rest of the hull planking.

I start by cutting strips from a billet at approximately 0.050" thick. I then pass them

through the Byrnes thickness sander bringing them down to 0.047" (3/64").

This ensures that all planks are of the same thickness and takes away any user

error when cutting the strips on the table saw.

The second thing I'll do is start sorting the strips so that I have strips that are close

to the same color. As you can see from the second picture that even though the

stripes have all been cut from the same piece of wood the not only vary in color from

piece to piece but also end to end. Pieces that vary too much in color will be used in

the areas covered by the frieze.

I was wondering what the bulkheads nominal thickness was, National Balsa didn't call that out, and I'm finding 1/4" ply running from .205 to .234 in the big box stores. MDF is spot on .250, but I noticed no one seems to use it for bulkheads,  I'm new to this so didn't want to build with a .205 ply to find out it wont work...

Better to use 6mm rather than anything too thin.  The lite ply at national balsa is the stuff i use.  Its what my Winnie is made from.

Thanks Chuck. I think your idea of having her planked in "no time" and mine might differ just a little bit. :)

Mldixon, I measured my ply from National Balsa and it was .232 - .234.

Thanks all for the likes and I hope for a Merry Christmas for all!

My resin castings from Syren arrived a couple of days ago and they are great.

I can't believe sharp and nice the fine detail is. They came in a nice sturdy box

which they were returned to and tucked safely away until needed.

I also received the chapter two laser cut set in cherry. These are my fall back

if I have issues when I attempt to scratch them.

The gun ports have all been painted red ochre so hopefully some planking will get done this weekend.

Looks good Rusty.  😁 Dont procrastinate too much with those bollard timbers....those are tricky.  Have a great New Years!!!

Happy New Years to you Chuck and everyone else too!

I completed the bollard timbers a while back. While doing the counter and wales I constantly flip

the hull upside-down, spin it around and just manipulate it a lot. So to be safe I tucked them away

and kept them off until the last possible moment. If all goes well I'll be putting them on later today.

I'm also re-doing the forward most gun port opening to be more inline with the plans.

Ben noticed that the port was a bit farther aft than it should have been.

I moved it forward about 1/8" to get it closer to the plans.

Thanks everyone for stopping by and the likes.

Nice to tune in and see your great work and progress. How you and the others manage to stay the course is a mystery to me. Life for me has many interruptions. Winne sits on the shelf while I add den cabinetry for my wife's art works. For now I will have to content myself with yours and the others works. Happy New Year!

Thanks Joe,

No matter what is going on I try to steal whatever time I can. Even if it's 20 minutes and one piece.

I've completed the port side upper planking. Unfortunately there was a "HOUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM" moment.

As I was working from the bow to stern doing two rows at a time by the 4th row at bulkhead "K" I started to see a problem cropping up.

I placed the 5th 3/16 strake where should be and you can see the other rows starting to take a dive.

DSC00046.thumb.JPG.25fb9492007044755ce16390aaaa3fa3.JPG

Scratched my head for a few minutes, made some measurements and looked at the model from a few different angles.

Looking at the next picture you can see what looks like a dip in the bottom of the wales.

DSC00045.thumb.JPG.56e9e0009749e6d644a72aba371eadc9.JPG

So I measured some more and determined the wales at bulkhead "A" was 1/16" between bulkheads "K" and "7". The Starboard side was correct.

905670049_Starboardissue.thumb.jpg.1383b465fbd410047088d1428de13520.jpg

So I pulled the planks off back to bulkhead "K" and the custom fit the pieces between "K" and "7". fit to the proper height of the 5th strake.

Thankfully the frieze will cover this and when running the molding the seam adjustment will never be seen.

I wanted to mention this so that others will be aware of the consequences of being off a little bit.

Anyways here is the completed port side planking. Needs some more sanding and a coat of wipe on poly.

On to the starboard side now.

Rusty, thank you very much for showing how you fixed this.  I imagine others will run into the same problem.  Could you please edit your photo with a circle or arrow highlighting your fix to help the remedial students such as myself? I can see the effect of your fix, but I can’t see where you put it.  Thanks.  It looks great!

Thank you Chuck for your advice. Also thanks for all the likes too.

What I did is replaced the 3/16" 5th strake with a 7/32" strake. Clipped in place.

I then measured the distance between the 2nd strake and the 5th strake. These two

strakes should have been 1/4" wide but I needed a bit more than that. So I then split the

distance between 2nd strake and the 5th strake and cut the two strakes to fit. These

are represented by the red boxes in the picture. Each set between the ports had to be custom cut

to fit. Once I got past bulkhead "7" I resumed normal planking.

Whew I hope that explains it.

In furniture making a 1/32" is easily handled without lament. In model ship building it can be dreadful. I have learned the hard way that tolerance build up, even with careful machining on very good model machines can creep in so easily that I have had to adjust my mentality from one project to the other. By golly you are human after all!!!!!

Here's where the Winnie is at in all her dirty glory. I'm happy to say that the starboard side went as it should.

I've planked the first 5 strakes above the wales from the bow to bulkhead #15.

She's in need of a sanding and a good cleaning. Thanks for stopping by and all the likes!

She looks great Rusty, have you decided on the final finish you are going to apply to that gorgeous pear? Maybe even oil it like Chris did on his Confed - that looked sublime IMO.

Hi Ben, I'm undecided on the finish at the moment. WOP, Tung Oil, Sanding Sealer? I guess I'll have to decide soon.

Hi Joe, So far so good. Hope to see all of you then.

Also thanks for all the likes! :)

Model looks great Rusty! Curious to know what red you used on your gun ports as I’m getting close to that stage.

I've now completed the planking above the wales on the starboard side. At this point it's been only sanded with 150 grit.

I'll now add at least the first two strakes below the wales before adding the second layer to the wales.

Once the two lowers strakes have been added I'll finish sanding and apply a finish.

I'll also be spending a lot of time this weekend turning these 1/4" sheets into 3/64" strips.

The instructions call for approximately 250 strips. That will take awhile! :)
