  1. I use a Panavise and I also picked up one of these Drill Press Vise's at Harbor Freight : http://www.harborfreight.com/4-inch-jaw-capacity-drill-press-vise-30999.html It is invaluable for filing edges exactly straight, (use the top edge of the jaws as a guide) creating scarf joints and the like, it's small and portable....
  2. I really like this kit... I may have to get one.....
  3. Nice Bob, I am liking the natural wood better than the painted ones I have been seeing. Will the skylight be natural also?
  4. Dave, is that alignment issue a design flaw or is it due to building the transom off the model? Or something else entirely?
  5. She is looking great Jason, I need to go back and read the a few pages to catch up but just wanted to add my atta boy before I do. That hull is just sexy curvy!! Well done!!
  6. are you talking about the metal gunport castings? If so, you would be better off not using them and mounting dummy cannon strips and framing the gunports yourself - the castings and the alignment slots are cumbersome at best.....
  7. Thanks Dave, and for all the likes's. Never did update the completion of this model and thread...... guess I better do that.....
  8. Now that is just awesome to see what a little creativity and talent will do for a hunk of wood.... Well Done!
  9. Prayer for your continued recovery, golf sounds good! I have looked at a few of these builds - how long is the hull exactly, without the bow sprit? I am thinking about trying this one..... Lou
  10. Wow Rod, beautiful tug.... I haven't been on here for awhile and had to check in on this log - excellent to say the least! Thanks also for the winch plan - I will do an adaptation of it on the Sanson Tug I am working on. (slowly, but that's how I roll)
  11. Single edge razor blade and a dremel with a cutoff wheel to grind the profile
  12. Well, how about some evergreen plastic strips and glue? A few passes qwith a needle file after and some paint should cover any imperfections.... Still need a good jig though..... BTW I totally missed the Kilroy and I thought the "FIA" was an acronym - maybe "forget it all" or something a bit stronger... :-)
  13. Great perseverence Jerry, have you thought of trying to make the mullions from brass? There should be some 1/16" strips of a suitable thickness that you could solder together with a jig, just a thought......
  14. Looking great Rod, do you have any closer pics of that winch or how it went together? I like the wheelhouse bits as well, are you going to detail that area? Keep up the good work... Lou
  15. Joe, this has got to be one of the best Granado builds on MSW. IMHO that title used to belong to Glenn Barlow but I think this build surpasses even that one - awesome joinery and building skills, great creativity in presentation and color choices but the rigging is the clincher, great job all around!!
  16. Welcome back Bill, you know what they say - "no pics and it didn't happen" :-) that being said I've got a bunch of pics I need to post.... :-)
  17. Well Eric, in for a penny, in for a pound! I am envious, I am tempted to try this beauty, but I know it will try my paitence. Keep reading the logs and collect the needed tools and continue to ask for help when needed. And take pictures - lots of pictures!
  18. Jerry, the top and butt planking is custom cut from wider maple stock from his own stash, I believe the kit only supplies some tanganika stripwood for the deck planking
  19. Ian, I don't know if it is available in the UK but Anigre is very close in color and characteristics to Castello Boxwood - it is also about 1/4 the price! http://www.wood-database.com/lumber-identification/hardwoods/anigre/ http://www.wood-database.com/lumber-identification/hardwoods/castelo-boxwood/
  20. Seriously nice work Jason - every time I look in on your log I start thinking...... keep up the high standard!
  21. You are absolutly right Mark, there are a multitude of ways to enjoy this great hobby and having great resources and quality materials adds to the enjoyment factor. think it is awesome to see the amount of choices we have these days and even if you choose to utilize very expensive materials (or a kit) it is still the best value for dollar spent of any of the myriad of hobbies that are out there. My helicopter habit is a great example..... About $600 for a nice heli and if you get 10 hours flying in before it needs more $$$ or you crash it you are fortunate indeed.....
  22. Oh, I thought the topic was the relevancy of close tolerance wood milling and its affect on building a quality wooden ship model......
  23. On crowns website a billet of boxwood 3"x24"x1/4" is $20 - it takes eight of those to make one board foot.....
