Tom, Not all chimneys swiveled. I can't speak for other countries but in the US and English ships, some were just open (square, l like a fireplace chimney), some were like the one Sjors has (fixed but with a bend at the top, square). The swivel type was round and had a small fin on top.

Scroll saw operation
mtaylor replied to bigcreekdad's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
BCD, Where I see the bending is when I'm trying to feed to fast and/or the blade dulled. -
I'm cheap. I have an old bamboo wood cutting board from a garage sale. When it gets chewed up, I just run the orbital sander over it.

Nicely done, Sjors. She's coming together beautifully. Edit: You might check that chimney... I can't tell but it looks like it is facing aft when it should be facing forward.

Gary needs to reload them. There was an issue a few months ago and some pictures were lost.

A good idea on the insert. The plastic ones are crap anyway and for small parts... pffffft!!! Seeing the way you made the carriage sides brings a smile to my face... That's probably the best way to make them.

How to avoid table saw fuzzies?
mtaylor replied to Keith_W's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Keith, I think Jeff was spot on. Hit his webpage and get the info on blades. I ordered blades for my "not the Jim Saw" from Thurston and fuzzies, etc. are thing of the past. -
Oh... I wasn't sure of the color as things change but Dominican Republic is a different breed all together. It's probably just an armor piercing then as I don't recall the .50 having a "light armor piercing" round. But again.. time and distance... It's hell getting older. 59 is the date stamp then...

Lovely work Dan. I noting the details as that's where the devil is... If my ship looks half as good, I'll be tickled.

My first ship was AL's Scottish Maid. Actually worked out quite well as it had good instructions, a great guide on planking, and good plans. However, I'm not sure that they still include all this anymore. It makes a nice model and as some have done, they've bashed it into something most excellent.

I think you're right on the .50 being a tracer... been too many years since played (read as: used) one. Air crews could make their own belts up so I used 1 ball, 1 tracer, 1 armor piercing, 1 incendiary, 1 armor piercing incendiary. Figured when we went hot into an LZ, we never knew what we'd run up against..... Depending on the date stamp on the bottom of the cartridge, you might want to be cautious on handling it. I love your belfry.

If no luck on the relevant area (please don't post the full plan sheet as that's a copyright issue), you can buy the plans here: http://www.modelexpo-online.com/product.asp?ITEMNO=MSPL2040

Unfortunately, that new gun won't work as it's inert. But I like the idea. Is the ship's seal: The Great Seal of Byzantium? Ok.. I'll get me coat. It's the one with "1001 Clever Things to Say on a Monday" in the pocket.

Planking help
mtaylor replied to Marvi's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
Marvi, Have look here: http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/forum/14-building-framing-planking-and-plating-a-ships-hull-and-deck/ The first pinned topic references the database. Have look also at the other topics in the Database. The last pinned topic is captured from a build log on MSW 1.0 is a pretty good starting point.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
