Mobbisie, If you're doing "overlap", then the direction of plating is pretty much set in stone... If you're not doing overlap, I think that decision is all yours.

For the fuzzies... try on a piece of scrap, scraping. Use a razor blade or even piece of broken glass. The fuzzies are a downside to basswood.

Freezer Paper - an awesome tool
mtaylor replied to Mahuna's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Harvey, It might also be labeled as "butcher's paper". It's white, waxed on one side only. I've not had a chance to check out the supermarket, Target, Costco, etc.... but I can see where this stuff would be way useful. -
Mercury by DSiemens - FINISHED - BOTTLE
mtaylor replied to DSiemens's topic in - Build logs for subjects built 1801 - 1850
Daniel, One does what one does when time allows... <sigh> The creed of us working types. I've got the same complaints. Now I could just retire.... Great looking work. At least if you put in few minutes here, a few minutes there, at some point, you'll realize how much you accomplished. -
Excellent work, Daniel... though that last pic of the builder is one to keep one awake nights.

Which company has the best rigging ropes?
mtaylor replied to lamarvalley's topic in Masting, rigging and sails
As a mid-level replacement to AL... Amati makes some nice line. Not as good as Morope. Given the state of product that the manufacturers are dumping, I'm guessing that more and more of us will be either buying or building ropewalks. -
Freezer Paper - an awesome tool
mtaylor replied to Mahuna's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Excellent tip, Frank. For some, the freezer paper may not be and option. Or alternately, change the way we work so that we do the pattern then cut as opposed to letting it sit for a day or so before we can get to it. -
I'd think that with stainless, water wouldn't be and issue... hmm... seal the ends of the shrink tubing with some epoxy paint???

Brand new to wood ship modeling and could use some advice.
mtaylor replied to Enderwiggin's topic in Wood ship model kits
Welcome to MSW. If you'll go here: http://modelshipworldforum.com/ship-model-plans-and-research.php which is in the Article area, you'll find several excellent articles on kit selection and what to expect. Also you can browse around the buildlog area and get an idea of what's involved. The one thing to keep in mind is to select a project that you really want to build. You'll be more likely to get through the frustrating parts. -
Hi Robbyn, I wondered where you and the crowd went... since I'm late to the party as usual, I go stand in the back and wait for someone to get up to get popcorn then grab their chair. Seriously, I'm looking forward to following along. And I promise not to steal anyone's seat. BTW, we've been having heavy rains and winds for the last week and they've been moving east... so you guys will probably have some more coming your way because it's still rainy and windy here.

Hi Juergen, Here's the webpage: http://www.hermione.com/ There's Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Le-chantier-Hermione-Lafayette/185262083157 And if you go to Youtube, there's a lot of videos. Some by the builders, others by visitors. It's a pretty fascinating project.

Mobbsie, While I still feel it's a sin to cover that beautiful planking, I'll be here pulling for you on the coppering. A lot of plates but I don't think you would have started this if you didn't think you could master the challenge.

Ah, but it's the gingerbread that makes these riverboats special. From the pictures out there, they may look similar but the details give them their personality. Lovely work on your details, Andrieke. Nice fix on the railing.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
