Beautifully done, Michel!

What is your plan for the seats of ease at the head?  It has always seemed to me that the roundhouses on the Tanneron model really belong in the 18th century, and not the latter 17th C.  Has your research pointed you in any definitive direction?  Would the arrangement of Frolich's L'Ambiteaux be more appropriate, for example?

Hello and thank you for the compliment
Indeed, the stools in a rotunda are not 17th century and rather English.
The reclining seats of the Royal Sun will be double as on the Ambitieux which is of the same time and the same site of Brest. This is part of the ongoing construction stage of the foal grating floor. But I have at the same time to finish the decorations of the smooth and squat (Heads of lion and paws, sea horse on the top of the herpes and, hunk, the naiades against the horse of bow and behind the herpes.
See you soon
Michel

Some work on the rear deck. Two cannons of 4 that remain to be rigged, the officer's rooms, the chicken coops. Finishing of the cages with the fittings of the trap doors and the mooring rings.
In anticipation the sculptures of the bow and the railings of the foreheads of the fellows and dunette.
See you soon
Michel

The way that last shot of the bow is cropped is a great impression of what she would look like afloat on her waterline.  Beautiful work, Michel! I particularly like the horsehead above the “herpes,” and the figurehead is nicely balanced, now, with it’s riding figures.

I realize that a number of you following this build may not be aware that Michel Saunier passed away, earlier this month.  Michel had been working diligently to complete his masterwork, however, a fatal heart attack robbed him of that opportunity.  His loss, among the worldwide community of ship-modelers, is deeply felt by people such as myself and many others whom Michel helped along our way with his deep knowledge and advice.

Following funeral services for Michel, on February 7th, Marc Yeu was invited back to the family home and afforded the opportunity to photograph the model one last time.

While it remains a possibility that one of Michel’s children will be inspired, some day, to complete the model, Michel’s Soleil Royal will virtually disappear from public view.

Marc Yeu has granted me permission to post his high-res photographs, and it seemed to me that Michel’s own build-log was the most sensible place to do so.

Marc captured numerous angles so that this photo essay is an invaluable and enduring resource to all who are interested in this ship, and contemporaries of her time.  As Marc commented to me, just recently - regarded in its entirety, it truly is a staggering piece of work!

Enjoy these pictures, mes amis:

Condolences to the family. What a pity Monsieur Saunier did not have the chance to complete his work of art. Comparable to an author passing away part way through writing a masterpiece (think "The Master Mariner Book II"). His family will always wonder what might have been, at the same time as having this magnificent reminder of him.

Marc - thank you for granting me access to your pics and permission to post them.  I’ve been in contact, recently, with another modeler from the UK who was also a great admirer of Michel’s work.  He had just recently learned of Michel’s passing and was very saddened by the news.

Thank you very much for posting these photos.  If ever there was an inspiration in ship modeling, this is certainly a top contender.

It is indeed sad that we have lost such a talent. I was wondering if another expert French model-maker might pick up the torch and complete this masterwork, if his family is amenable to the idea.
